Wingate rides huge second quarter to finish season sweep over Queens

Charlotte, N.C.---The Wingate University Bulldogs outscored Queens University 16-2 in the second quarter Wednesday night en route to a 56-44 road victory in South Atlantic Conference women's basketball in Curry Arena. The Bulldogs improve to 16-12 overall and 10-11 in league action, while the Royals falls to 5-22 overall and 4-17 in the SAC.

KEY STATS

- Wingate shot 43 percent from the field on the afternoon, Queens shot 38 percent
- The Bulldogs shot 30 percent (three-for-10) from three-point range, the Royals also shot 30 percent from beyond the arc (six-for-20)
- WU pulled down 31 rebounds, while QU collected 30
- The Bulldogs held a dominant 32-20 advantage in points in the paint
- Wingate held an 6-3 edge in second-chance points
- QU turned the ball over 23 times, WU had 16 turnovers
- The 'Dogs converted those 23 turnovers into 13 points
- The Bulldogs hit 11-of-20 free throws while the Royals went six-for-12 at the line

- Teliyah Jeter posted 16 points and added three blocks
- Hannah Clark collected 12 points and four assists

- Elana Ingram added seven points, eight rebounds, three assists and three steals
- Bryanna Troutman posted six points, nine boards, two assists, two blocks and three steals

FIRST QUARTER

- The first bucket of the game came from Ingram at the 8:44 mark
- The Royals answered with a 9-0 run, Madison Sexton made two triples in the run
- At the six-minute mark a Troutman free throw pulled the 'Dogs within five
- After three scoreless minutes an Ingram three-point play made it 9-7
- Clark made a three with 1:52 to go pulling Wingate within one
- Queens ended the frame with a three and a Taylor Stevens free throw to lead 15-10

SECOND QUARTER

- The Bulldogs started the second frame with a 7-0 run
- WU got buckets from Troutman and Jeter, and a three from Taylor Blakely
- A Queens layup from Kristian Eanes tied the game at 17-17
- That was the only points Wingate conceded in the second quarter
- The Bulldogs finished the frame on a 9-0 run
- A Clark three made it 20-17 with 7:14 to go
- The 'Dogs got a Jeter layup and a pair of Ingram free throw to push the lead to seven
- The scoring was capped by a Jeter bucket with eight seconds left in the half

THIRD QUARTER

- A Troutman layup at the eight-minute mark gave Wingate the 30-17 lead
- At the midway point a Andrea Shire three made it an 11-point game with a bucket
- WU got a Coleman jumper with just under three minutes to go, making it 34-23
- A Clark three-point play pushed the Bulldogs' lead to 14
- Queens got a jumper from Caitlyn Moore at the 1:51 mark
- The frame was capped by an Eanes free throw making it 37-26

FOURTH QUARTER

- The Royals got on the board first in the final frame, getting a layup from Moore
- Coleman made back-to-back jumpers to give Wingate a 43-40 lead with 7:30 to go
- At the six-minute mark a layup from the Royals made it a 10-point game
- WU got two more buckets from Coleman to make it 48-34 at the midway point
- Eanes hit a jumper for Queens to answer
- The 'Dogs got a Jeter layup with 4:08 left to play
- Queens got back-to-back buckets from Eanes to cut the lead to nine with 2:28 to go
- At the two-minute mark a Jeter layup made it 52-41
- The Royals' final field goal of the game was a Kelsey Leedle three
- Wingate iced it at the line getting free throws from Jeter and Clark in the final 90 seconds of action

UP NEXT

- The Bulldogs return home Saturday to take on Tusculum on Senior Day at 2 p.m.
- Wingate will be on the road next Wednesday to start SAC Tournament play
