#13 Wingate cruises past Falcons 21-9

Wingate, N.C.----The 13th-ranked Wingate University Bulldogs got 16 combined goals from Willie Grieco, Adam Vodovnik and Bobby Padden Saturday afternoon, racing out to a 15-4 halftime lead en route to a 21-9 victory in NCAA Division II men's lacrosse action at Graham Gill Field.
 
KEY STATS

- Wingate out-shot Montevallo 62-35 on the day
- The 'Dogs won 24-of-34 faceoffs
- The Falcons had 23 turnovers; the Bulldogs turned it over 17 times
- Montevallo scored on one of six extra-man opportunities; Wingate scored on two of four

KEY BULLDOGS

Willie Grieco piled up six goals in nine shots to go along with six assists
Adam Vodovnik and Bobby Padden had five goals each, combining for three assists
Liam Johnson handed out two assists
- Noah Ehinger won 11-of-16 face-offs, adding a goal and six ground balls
- James Kotcamp won 13-of-18 face-offs and picked up six ground balls
- Daman Lingasin, Collin Fleming, Ronan Stenstram and Tyler Dooley each had a goal
Reese Orman picked up 15 ground balls and had two caused turnovers
KC Carlson piled up 15 saves on the day

NOTES

- First-ever meeting between the two schools
- 'Dogs scored 20 goals for the second straight game
- Three straight wins dating back to last season, outscoring opponents 59-19
- Grieco already has 19 points through two games this year (8 goals, 11 assists)
- The sophomore has piled up 20 points his last three games
- Vodovnik has already scored 11 goals this season, adding four assists
- The reigning SAC Player of the Week has 32 points his last five games
- Carlson got the win in his first collegiate start, piling up 15 saves
- Career-high 15 ground balls for Orman
- Career-high tying five goals for Padden, who has had multiple points every game the last two seasons  

FIRST PERIOD

- Grieco's goal two minutes in tied the game at one
- Goals from Padden, Vodovnik, Fleming and Greico put the 'Dogs on top 7-1
- Fleming and Padden struck again within one minute of each other
- Wingate held Montevallo scoreless for nearly 15 minutes of action in the huge 7-1 run

SECOND PERIOD

- Goals from Vodovnik and Padden extended the lead to 9-2 within the first four minutes of the second
- Montevallo scored three unanswered goals to cut the lead to six
- Padden, Grieco and Vodovnik each found the back of the net to make it 15-4 at halftime
 
THIRD PERIOD
 
- Grieco's goal eight minutes in put the 'Dogs on top by 10
- Jackson Neufeld pulled the Falcons back within nine heading to the final period


FOURTH QUARTER
 
- Ehinger, Padden, and Strenstom scored in the first five minutes to push the lead back to 12
- Lingasin scored a man-up goal with 6:27 remaining to make it 20-8
- Dooley capped the scoring for the 'Dogs on the day at the 4:53 mark, making it 21-9

UP NEXT

- Wingate travels to Limestone for the SAC opener on Feb. 27 at 3 p.m.
- Wingate is back home March 6 to host UVA Wise at 3 p.m.
