Wingate drops a pair of tight contests in Saturday doubleheader at Newberry

Newberry, S.C.----The Newberry College Wolves swept visiting Wingate University in a South Atlantic Conference baseball doubleheader Saturday afternoon. Newberry won the opener 3-1, while prevailing 7-6 in game two to improve to 5-3 overall and 2-0 in the SAC. Wingate falls to 4-3 overall and 3-3 in league play.

GAME ONE | Newberry 3 Wingate 1

KEY BULLDOGS

- Grayson Chapman went one-for-three with an RBI to lead the offense
- Hunter Dula also had a hit for the Bulldogs
- Logan McNeely scored a run
- David Nash went six innings, allowing three runs on seven hits

SECOND INNING

- Newberry got on the board on a Dalton Landsdowne RBI single, plating Zane Tarrance

FOURTH INNING

- A Rhett Jolly two-run double drove home Aidan Baur and Jack Harris to make it 3-0

SEVENTH INNING

- McNeely drew a leadoff walk, then moved to second on an error
- He scored on Chapman's RBI single to make it 3-1

WRAPUP

- Tomas Sorcia got the win, moving to 2-1
- He allowed a run on two hits in seven innings, striking out seven and walking two
- Nash took the loss, falling to 2-1, registering two strikeouts and a walk on the day

- Jed Bryant had a homer and two RBI to lead the WU attack

- Simpson was hit by a pitch to start the frame, then stole second
- He scored on Dula's RBI groundout to make it a two-run game

EIGHTH INNING

- A McKay single and Motsinger walk put two on for Wingate
- They would both score on wild pitches to tie it at five
- Bryant's RBI single plated Simpson to put the 'Dogs on top 6-5
- A triple and walk put two on for Newberry in the bottom of the frame
- A two-run single from Kenny Bergmann gave the Wolves the 7-6 lead

WRAPUP

- Josh Stempihar got the win, tossing 1 2/3 shutout innings while striking out two
- Brody McCullough took the loss, allowing two runs in 2 1/3 innings while striking out four
- Mac Callari allowed three runs in four innings with two strikeouts
- Josh Karklin struck out two in two-thirds of an inning
