Bulldogs drop 70-69 heartbreaker in SAC Tournament opener

Newberry, S.C.----The Wingate University Bulldogs erased a 16-point halftime deficit and took a fourth-quarter lead Saturday afternoon, but Newberry College held on for a 70-69 victory in the opening round of the 2021 South Atlantic Conference women's basketball tournament. Newberry improves to 10-9 overall, while the Bulldogs end their season at 10-10.

- Virgo's triple at the 3:09 mark pushed the lead to 16
- Tyla Stolberg's layup with 18 seconds left gave Newberry a 42-25 advantage
- Hannah Clark's free throws in the final second pulled the 'Dogs within 16

THIRD QUARTER

- Wingate opened the third quarter on a 15-2 run to cut the lead to three
- Saylor, Wilson and Davis had four points each in the flurry, which made it 44-41 with 3:18 left
- Two Hatfield free throws made it a two-point game with two-minute left
- Keli Romas hit a three to put the Wolves back on top by five
- Troutman's bucket with 1:29 left made it 50-47 heading to the fourth

FOURTH QUARTER

- The Bulldogs scored the first five points of the final frame to take the lead
- Troutman's three-point play with 8:49 left capped the flurry to make it 52-50
- Kelsey Brett's three with 6:32 remaining put the Wolves back on top by two
- Back-to-back Troutman buckets put Wingate back on top 61-60 with three minutes left
- Wilson buried a triple with 1:47 remaining to give the 'Dogs a 64-62 advantage
- Brett answered with a three to put Newberry back on top by one
- Virgo buried a huge triple with 11 seconds remaining to make it 70-66
- Hatfield hit a three in the final second to make the final margin 70-69
