UNC Pembroke holds on for 2-1 victory over Wingate

Pembroke, N.C.----The UNC Pembroke Braves scored a pair of runs in the first inning Wednesday night and held on for a 2-1 victory over visiting Wingate University in NCAA Division II baseball action. UNCP improves to 12-5 overall while the Bulldogs fall to 10-6 on the season.

KEY STATS

- The Braves out-hit the Bulldogs 6-4
- UNCP had the only two extra-base hits and the lone homer
- Pembroke left seven on base; the 'Dogs stranded five
- Each team committed one error
- Wingate had four of the six stolen bases; UNCP was caught stealing once
- UNCP struck out 14 without walking a batter; WU had nine strikeouts and two walks

KEY BULLDOGS

- Jed Bryant was two-for-four with an RBI and two stolen bases
- Carson Simpson added a hit, stolen base and run scored
- McCann Mellett also collected a hit for the Bulldogs
- Austin Mitchell tossed two shutout innings with two strikeouts
- Brody McCullough struck out four in two shutout innings
- Tommy McCollum retired all six batters he faced, striking out three

- Simpson led off the game with a single
- He stole second, then scored on Bryant's RBI single to give Wingate a 1-0 lead
- George Hammonds connected on a two-run homer in the bottom of the frame to give UNCP a 2-1 lead

WRAPUP

- Brandon Winstead got the win, moving to 1-0
- He allowed a run on three hits in three innings, striking out eight without walking a batter
- River Ryan struck out two in a shutout inning of relief to earn the save
- David Nash took the loss, falling to 2-3
- He allowed two runs on two hits in two innings of work
