Wingate closes out perfect road trip with 70-65 victory at Anderson

Anderson, S.C.-—-The Wingate University Bulldogs outscored Anderson University 37-24 in the second and third quarters Saturday afternoon en route to a 70-65 road victory in South Atlantic Conference women's basketball action. The Bulldogs win cap a perfect four-game road trip to start 2022, while also winning their 14th straight contest to improve to 14-1 on the season and a perfect 12-0 in league action. The Trojans fall to 9-8 overall and 9-4 in the SAC.

- Anderson shot 41 percent from the field; Wingate shot 40 percent
- The Trojans shot five-of-24 from three-point range (21 percent), while the Bulldogs were one-of-eight from deep (13 percent)

- After a Taylor Hair bucket cut the deficit to a single point, the Bulldogs added two more baskets, taking a 32-27 lead
- A pair of Trojan free throws broke a 90-second scoreless drought from both sides
- The 'Dogs finished the half on a 9-3 run
- Hurley added a basket to give WU a 34-31 lead
- Brandon followed up with a three off an inbounds play to double the Bulldog lead

THIRD QUARTER
 
- Two Anderson baskets in the opening minute of the second half cut their deficit to three points
- Wingate answered with a 13-0 run over six and a half minutes to take their largest lead of the game
- Clark, Davis and Troutman baskets brought the score to 47-38
- Two Clark layups followed while a Troutman layup and free throw gave the 'Dogs a 54-38 lead with 3:13 left in the quarter
- A quick 5-0 mini-run from Anderson cut the deficit to 12
- Clark's layup at the buzzer made the score 59-46 with 10 minutes remaining
 
FOURTH QUARTER
 
- Anderson opened the quarter on a 6-0 run
- Shameka McNeill's layup cut the deficit to seven points
- The Bulldogs answered with a 6-0 run of their own
- Wilson's layup gave Wingate a 65-52 lead with 5:36 remaining
- The Trojans fought back behind an 11-1 run
- McNeill's layup with less than two minutes remaining cut the WU lead to a single possession
- With a chance to tie the game, Clark stole the ball with 63 seconds left
- Lauren Sullivan grabbed a key offensive rebound that helped Wingate keep possession with 34 seconds remaining
- With the shot clock winding down, the Bulldogs forced an Anderson foul that sent Clark to the foul line
- After knocking down both, Wingate forced a stop, with Brandon's rebound and pair of free throws sealing the victory
