Wingate prevails in penalty kicks to advance to round two of NCAA Tourney play

Hickory, N.C.----The seventh-seeded Wingate University Bulldogs advanced to the second round of the 2022 NCAA Division II men's soccer tournament on penalty kicks Saturday night over Converse University. The Bulldogs move on to Monday's second round and move to 10-4-6 overall, while the Valkyries' season ends at 13-1-5.

- Sergi Quixal converted for the Valkyries to tie the match at 1 in the 87th minute
 
OVERTIME
 
- Rodrigues' potential winner hit the post just over two minutes into the first overtime
- Neither team was able to record a shot in the first OT
 
SECOND OVERTIME
 
- Janjic made two saves in the final 10 minutes of overtime to send the teams into penalty kicks
 
PENALTY KICKS
 
- Converse's first PK taker made, while Wingate's missed, giving CU the early 1-0 advantage
- After a CU miss, Wittur drilled his try to even it at 1-1
- Quixal converted, while Wingate's was no good, giving Converse another 2-1 advantage
- Maximilian Seiwald and Rodrigues both made in the fourth round, putting Converse in a clinching scenario
- In a must-stop situation, Janjic made the season-clinching save to setup a final try for WU
- Needing to convert to extend it, van Honk made his PK to make it 3-3 through 5 PKs

- Marshall's successful PK sent the Bulldogs to the second round in thrilling fashion
