Austin, Texas----Wingate University has six student-athletes recognized on the 2022 Academic All-District® III men's and women's soccer teams, as selected by the College Sports Communicators (formerly CoSIDA) this week. South Atlantic Conference Defensive Player of the Year
Owen Marshall represents the Bulldog men, while five standouts are listed from the Wingate women's team.
Leading the way for the Bulldog women are 2022 All-SAC choices

Katrine Thisgaard. In addition,
Yasmin Cowley,
Sophia Husted and
Jess LaFrancis join Cristy and Thisgaard on the Academic All-District® list. Both Wingate teams received berths to the 2022 NCAA Division II playoffs. Marshall and his mates play a third-round NCAA playoff match against No. 23 Barry University Friday in Melbourne, Florida.
The CSC recognize the nation's top student-athletes for their combined performances on the field and in the classroom. The CSC Academic All-America® program separately recognizes soccer honorees in four divisions — NCAA Division I, NCAA Division II, NCAA Division III and NAIA — for each gender. Marshall and the Wingate women's quintet are each honored for the first time in their respective Bulldog careers.

Senior defender (York, England)
2022 South Atlantic Conference Defensive POTY
Four-year All-SAC performer
- All-SAC and All-Southeast Region choice for the league regular season champions
- Anchor of the No. 1 SAC defense, as 'Dogs have posted a 0.67 GAA on the year
- Second on team with five goals with two match-winners
- Academically, Marshall holds a 3.61 GPA as a finance major
Yasmin Cowley
Junior forward (Essex, England)
- Recorded one goal and three assists as the 'Dogs advanced to the SAC title match
- Found the back of the nets in Wingate's 3-1 victory over Mount Olive (August 27, 2022)
- Scored four goals as a sophomore with one match-winning tally
- In the classroom, Cowley has a 3.72 GPA with her exercise science major
Nicole Cristy
Junior defender (Indian Trial, N.C.)
2022 All-South Atlantic Conference, third team
- Helped Wingate defense post a 0.75 GAA this season with nine shutouts
- Bulldogs allowed only 15 goals in 20 matches during the 2022 campaign
- Scored the match-winning goal in a 1-0 triumph over Newberry (Sept. 28, 2022)
- Academically, Cristy has a 3.77 GPA with her nursing major
Sophia Husted
Sophomore midfielder (Tjaereborg, Denmark)
- Scored three goals for the defensive-minded Bulldogs, dishing out two assists as well
- Netted two match-winning goals for Wingate (vs. UNC Pembroke, at Coker)
- Started every match she played this season (19/19)
- In the classroom, Husted sports a 3.85 GPA as an exercise science major
Jess LaFrancis
Senior midfielder (Hickory, N.C.)
2019 All-South Atlantic Conference, second team
- One of five Bulldogs to start every match this season (20/20)
- Helped Wingate defense post a 0.75 GAA this season with nine shutouts
- Found the back of the nets in a home victory over Shaw (Oct. 12, 2022)
- Academically, LaFrancis has a 3.93 GPA with her accounting major
Katrine Thisgaard
Sophomore goalkeeper (Engesvang, Denmark)
2022 All-South Atlantic Conference, third team
- Started every match at goalkeeper for the Bulldogs (20/20)
- Posted a 0.75 GAA and an .815 save percentage with nine shutouts
- Ranked second in the SAC in shutouts, third in save percentage and fourth in GAA
- In the classroom, Thisgaard has a perfect 4.000 as an exercise science major
What's Next
Academic All-District® honorees advance to the CSC Academic All-America® ballot. First-, second- and third-team Academic All-America® honorees will be announced in early December. The CSC Academic All-District® teams include the student-athletes listed on the releases linked in this story.
NCAA Division II CSC Academic All-America® programs
The Division II CSC Academic All-America® programs are partially financially supported by the NCAA Division II national governance structures to assist CSC with handling the awards fulfillment aspects for the 2022-23 Divisions II Academic All-America® programs.
District III includes schools with affiliations to the South Atlantic Conference, the Conference Carolinas and the Peach Belt Conference. To be nominated for Academic All-America® honors, a student-athlete must be at least a sophomore with a 3.50 cumulative grade point average and must be a starter or a significant reserve on his or her team.
Wingate University
