Charlotte, N.C.----The nationally-ranked Wingate University men's and women's swimming teams concluded the Royal Open at Queens University of Charlotte's Levine Center Saturday evening. The Bulldogs' next adventure is the NCAA Division II championships March 9-12 in Greensboro. The Queens Royals are hosting the event at the
Greensboro Aquatic Center.
During the Saturday morning time trials, Wingate freshman
Miguel Marcos broke the Levine Center pool record in the 1650 Freestyle with his NCAA Division II B cut time of 15:21.52. The previous record was held by Queens student-athlete
Alex Menke, who swam a time of 15:24.23 on Nov. 23, 2014.
Bulldog graduate student
Anne-Sofie Nissen bounced back from an injury to post two NCAA Division II B cuts in her signature breaststroke events. She swam the top prelims' time of 2:17.67 in the 200 Breaststroke. In the Saturday morning time trials, Nissen posted a mark of 1:03.36 in the 100 Breastsroke.
What They Are Saying
Wingate head coach
Kirk Sanocki
"(We had) a great deal of improvement toward our NCAA pursuit, with a bunch of provisional standards. In addition, we had multiple personal-best swims out of our student-athletes from last week's BMC event. We are now in a holding pattern until the other conference meets conclude this weekend."
Wingate graduate student
Anne-Sofie Nissen
"I have to say that I am very relieved and happy with my swims today. After my injury during the Bluegrass Mountain Conference meet, I'm just glad that I still had the speed, power and mentality to push through and drop time to hopefully make me safe for NCAAs."
"There have been some incredible swims the past two weekends, and I love how people are able to end the season on a good note with the whole team cheering, both at conference and at (the) Royal Open. Competing at the BMC meet and the Royal Open is always special. The team and the atmosphere are amazing and the way that we all have each other's back is like having a second family away from home."
"Being a part of this team is something you cannot describe, and I love how people are always able to step up and support each other, both inside and outside the pool. The season is rough, but all the hard work and practice that we put in always ends up paying off in the end. WU What? WU Swim!"
Wingate junior
Bennett Broad
"The Royal Open was a great opportunity for our team, as some seniors were wrapping up their swimming careers, while others were striving to make their cuts for nationals! Swimming at this meet was a nice way to finish a successful year. Everyone on this team has put in a tremendous amount of work…and it's nice to see my teammates achieve their goals. I look forward to one last season as a part of the WU Swim family…and I can't wait to see what performances our team can bring at NCAAs to close out the 2022 season!"
