McNeely’s big day leads #1 Wingate to doubleheader sweep at Carson-Newman

Jefferson City, Tenn.----Reigning NCAA Division II World Series Most Outstanding Player Logan McNeely blasted a pair of homers and drove in seven runs Saturday afternoon, leading top-ranked Wingate University to a doubleheader sweep at Carson-Newman University in South Atlantic Conference baseball action. Wingate improves to 13-1 overall and 2-0 in the SAC, while the Eagles fall to 10-5 overall and 0-2 in league play.

- Jordan Griffin's RBI single made it a 7-2 game

- Motsinger put the 'Dogs back on top by six with a solo shot in the eighth to make it 8-2

WRAPUP

- Mitchell got the win, moving to 4-0 on the year
- He went seven innings, allowing two runs on three hits while striking out eight
- The preseason All-SAC honoree has gone at least six innings in all four starts this season
- That marks seven straight starts with at least six innings of work for Mitchell, including his three stellar outings in the 2021 postseason run
- Howard struck out three and allowed just one hit in his two shutout innings in relief
- Brayden Coe took the loss, falling to 2-1, allowing seven runs on six hits in 4 1/3 innings

- Three walks loaded the bases for the Bulldogs in the final frame of regulation
- The Eagles got out of the jam with a flyout to send it to the bottom of the seventh
- Broderson worked a 1-2-3 frame with two strikeouts to send it to extras

EIGHTH INNING

- Micah Genter led off the bottom of the eighth with a double, then went to third on a flyout
- He tried to score on a groundout, but was thrown out at home by Andrew McKay at second
- McNeely then gunned down a runner trying to steal to end the inning

NINTH INNING

- Motsinger ripped a double to right center to start the frame
- McNeely blasted a towering two-run shot down the left field line to put the 'Dogs on top 4-2
- After a flyout started the bottom of the inning, Broderson struck out the final two to finish off the sweep

WRAPUP

- Broderson got the win, moving to 1-0 on the year
- He allowed just one it in four shutout innings of relief, striking out five without a walk
- The sophomore has allowed just one run in his 12 2/3 innings of work this season, striking out 19
- Broderson capped his freshman year with five no-hit innings of relief in the national title game
- Jake Wright took the loss, falling to 0-1
- He allowed a run on a hit in 2 1/3 innings, striking out five and walking three
