Grand slams and big innings highlight Wingate’s doubleheader sweep over Catawba

Wingate, N.C.----The Wingate University Bulldogs got grand slams from Savannah Lampley and Savanna Swickard Tuesday afternoon, sweeping a doubleheader against Catawba College in South Atlantic Conference softball action. Wingate won the opener 9-6, while rolling to a 10-1 five-inning victory in game two to improve to 30-15 overall and 12-6 in the SAC. The Indians fall to 4-30 overall and 0-20 in league play.

GAME ONE | Wingate 9 Catawba 6

- Wingate out-hit Catawba 13-9
- The Indians had six of the 11 extra-base hits and four of the five homers
- The Bulldogs left six on base; Catawba stranded four
- The 'Dogs had both stolen bases in the contest
- Wingate committed the lone error
- WU pitching struck out 10 without a walk; Catawba had four strikeouts and five walks

KEY BULLDOGS

- Lampley was two-for-two with a grand slam, four RBI and two runs scored
- Heaven Maness went three-for-four with two doubles, a triple, two RBI and a run scored
- Sydney Kale added two hits and a pair of RBI
- Hannah Stevens went one-for-two with a double, RBI and run scored
- Hannah Reeves collected a hit and two runs scored
 - Sara Stroud and Alyssa Hall each contributed a hit and run scored
 - Hali Scott earned the win, striking out five in 3 2/3 innings of relief

SECOND INNING

- A two-run homer from Courtnee Carter gave the Indians an early lead
- Reeves drew a two-out walk in the bottom of the frame
- An RBI double from Stevens got the 'Dogs on the board

THIRD INNING

- Lampley drew a leadoff walk, then stole second
- She scored on an RBI triple from Maness to tie it at two

FOURTH INNING

- A two-run shot from Brittany Ireland put the Indians back on top by two

FIFTH INNING

- Singles from Lampley, Stroud and Hall started the inning
- A Maness RBI double plated Hall to pull Wingate back within a run

SIXTH INNING

- Solo homers from Madison Taylor and Ireland put Catawba on top 6-3
- The Bulldogs answered with six runs in the bottom of the frame
- Laney McLaurin and Reeves started the inning with singles, while a Stevens walk loaded the bases
- Lampley crushed the first pitch she saw over the fence in center, clearing the bases to put WU on top 7-6
- A Stroud walk and stolen base, followed by a Maness double put runners on second and third
- Kale's two-run single put the 'Dogs on top by three

WRAPUP

- Scott got the win, moving to 8-4
- She allowed two runs on five hits in 3 2/3 innings, striking out five without a walk
- Raechel Cutcher allowed two earned runs in 3 1/3 innings of work with five strikeouts
- Lauren Brickey took the loss, allowing nine runs on 13 hits in six innings, striking out four and walking five

- Stevens cleared the bases with a three-run double to make it 10-0
