‘Dogs take two at Limestone to notch second straight SAC road sweep

Gaffney, S.C.----The Wingate University Bulldogs collected their second conference road sweep of the week Saturday afternoon, taking two at Limestone University in South Atlantic Conference softball action. Wingate won the first 9-7, then prevailed 5-1 in game two to improve to 28-15 overall and 10-6 in the SAC. The Saints fall to 25-15 overall and 8-12 in league play.

KEY STATS


- Each team had nine hits
- The Saints had five of the nine extra-base hits and three of the four homers
- Limestone left five on base while the 'Dogs stranded three
- Each team had an error and each team stole a base
- WU pitching struck out four and walked one; LU had 11 strikeouts and four walks

KEY BULLDOGS

- Heaven Maness was two-for-four with a homer, two RBI and two runs scored
- Ragan Liles added a hit and a pair of RBI
- Sara Stroud was two-for-four with a triple, RBI and run scored
- Sydney Kale went three-for-four with two doubles, an RBI and two runs scored
- Savannah Lampley drove in a run and scored twice
- Laney McLaurin added a hit and an RBI for the Bulldogs
- Kale also went five innings in relief to earn the win

FIRST INNING

- Stroud started the game with a triple, then scored on a Maness RBI bunt single
- Maness stole second, then scored on Kale's RBI single to make it 2-0
- Limestone scored four in the bottom of the frame to take a two-run lead
- The Saints got homers from Ruthie Jackson, Desiree Bain and Madison Chappell in the frame

SECOND INNING

- Lampley was hit by a pitch to start the inning
- She scored on Stroud's RBI single to make it 4-3
- Ashley Parnell's RBI single in the bottom of the frame put Limestone back on top by two

FIFTH INNING

- The 'Dogs plated five runs in the fifth to take the lead
- A solo homer from Maness got things started, making it a one-run game
- Savanna Brooks drew a walk, then moved to third on a Kale double
- Hali Scott drew a walk to load the bases
- Lampley's bases-loaded walk plated Brooks to make it 5-5
- McLaurin followed with a sacrifice fly to put the Bulldogs on top
- Liles delivered a big two-run single up the middle to make it 8-5

SIXTH INNING

- A Faye Lawson RBI double and Parnell RBI single pulled the Saints back within a run at 8-7

SEVENTH INNING

- The Bulldogs added some insurance in the top of the seventh
- Kale started it with a double to left center, then moved to third on Scott's sacrifice bunt
- Lampley then reached on an error, with Kale scoring on the play to make it 9-7

WRAPUP

- Kale got the win, moving to 7-9
- She allowed two runs on three hits in five innings, striking out four without a walk
- Haley White took the loss, allowing eight runs on seven hits in 4 1/3 innings, striking out nine and walking four

- Lawson led off the frame with Limestone's lone hit of the contest, a solo shot to left

- Wingate regained its four-run cushion with a run in the sixth
- Stroud drew a leadoff walk, then stole second
- She scored on an RBI single from Brooks to make it 5-1

WRAPUP

- Scott got the win, moving to 7-4
- The freshman allowed a run on just one hit in seven innings, striking out four and walking two
- Natalie Ruth took the loss, allowing five runs on eight hits in seven innings, striking out four and walking five

UP NEXT

- Wingate is back in action Tuesday, hosting Catawba for a 1 p.m. doubleheader
