Rock Hill, S.C.----The Wingate University Bulldogs had a school-record 221 student-athletes named to the 2021-22 South Atlantic Conference Commissioner's Honor Roll, which was released Monday morning. To be eligible for inclusion on the SAC Commissioner's Honor Roll, student-athletes must have competed in a sponsored championship sport and maintained a cumulative GPA of 3.30 or higher throughout the academic year.
The South Atlantic Conference announced last week that 2,578 student-athletes, spanning each of the conference's 13 member institutions, were named to the 2021-22 SAC Commissioner's Honor Roll. "We are thrilled to recognize more than 2,500 of our student-athletes for their outstanding academic accomplishments," SAC Commissioner Patrick Britz says. "This is the third consecutive year that we have had more than 2,000 student-athletes be recognized for their outstanding achievements in the classroom, which continues to prove the high priority our institutions are putting on academic success. We are extremely proud of the hard work and dedication of these student-athletes to be successful in the classroom and in their athletic arena."
The 2021-22 academic year was another successful one for the Bulldogs, who won their 14th consecutive SAC Excellence Cup, while finishing 13th in the Learfield Sports Directors' Cup. The Bulldogs won six SAC titles, while 16 of the 20 teams finished in the top three in the league standings. The 'Dogs had 13 different teams earn points towards the Directors' Cup in NCAA postseason play.
Of the 20 SAC Scholar-Athletes in 2021-22, seven came from Wingate University, who now has a league-best 94 SAC Scholar-Athletes all-time. In the fall, football's
Andrew Strickland, along with cross country's
Bastian Mrochen and
Tatjana Mense and women's soccer's
McKenna DeLong earned Scholar-Athlete accolades. Women's basketball
Bryanna Troutman took home the honor in the winter, while baseball's
Logan McNeely and tennis's
Camilla Ciaccia took home the hardware in the spring.
Wingate had five more student-athletes earn Academic All-America honors in 2021-22, with Strickland and
Tucker Mullis getting things started in the fall.
Anna Miram and
Jonas Soerensen picked up Academic All-America recognition in the winter, with
Corey Avant taking home the honors in the spring.
The Bulldogs had several players earn high league honors while also being named to the SAC Commissioner's Honor Roll. Troutman,
Willie Grieco and
Leah Knowles all earned SAC Player of the Year honors while also earning a spot on the honor roll, with SAC Pitcher of the Year
Brody McCullough also earning a spot on the honor roll. SAC Freshmen of the Year Mrochen,
Seaver King and
Florian Walcher also earned honor roll accolades.
Wingate's 137 Academic All-America honorees all-time are the most it the SAC. The Bulldogs have 128 honorees since 2000, which is the most in all of NCAA Division II. It is also the most of all universities in North Carolina.
