Wingate rolls to 74-51 win over Coker

Wingate, N.C. —- The Wingate University women's basketball team held Coker University to 31 percent shooting on Monday afternoon, cruising to a 74-51 victory in South Atlantic Conference women's basketball action in Cuddy Arena. The Bulldogs improve to 9-3 overall and 2-1 in the SAC, while the Cobras drop to 4-8 overall and 0-5 in league play.
 
KEY STATS
 
- Wingate made 43 percent of their shots, while Coker made just 31 percent of its attempts
- The Bulldogs were four-for-13 (31 percent) from three-point range; the Cobras made three of 20 from deep
- CU was 12-for-14 (86 percent) from the free throw line, while WU went 22-of-27 (82 percent) from the charity stripe
- Wingate out-rebounded Coker 41-34 and out-scored CU 12-8 in second-chance points
- The Bulldogs had 18 assists to just 11 turnovers; while the Cobras had five assists and committed 14 turnovers

FIRST QUARTER
 
- Coker scored the first two baskets of the game, taking a 4-0 lead after 90 seconds
- The 'Dogs responded with six unanswered points
- CU had a 6-0 run of their own later in the quarter, taking a 12-9 lead with less than four minutes to go
- A Bethel Ekperigha jumper and a three-pointer from Emily Hege took the lead right back for Wingate
- Dasia Lambert's late-quarter layup gave the Cobras an 18-16 lead at the end of the quarter
 
SECOND QUARTER
 
- After Coker took a two-point lead, the Bulldogs went on a 13-0 run to break through for their first double-digit lead off Sullivan's layup just after the midway point of the quarter
- CU fought back with five unanswered points to nearly cut the deficit in half
- The Bulldogs finished the half on a 7-2 run to take a 38-27 lead into the halftime locker room
 
THIRD QUARTER
 
- Davis scored on a layup to open up the second half to take a 13-point lead
- Two Cobra threes around a Wingate basket cut the deficit to single digits with just over eight minutes left
- The Bulldog lead got up to as much as 14 points several times throughout the quarter, as WU took a 54-40 lead into the final period
 
FOURTH QUARTER
 
- Coker opened the quarter with back-to-back scores to cut the deficit to 10
- Another 13-0 Wingate run opened up the lead, as the Bulldogs took a dominant 67-44 advantage at the 3:11 mark
- A Dyson three-pointer gave WU its largest lead of the game at 25 with under a minute to go
- The Cobras scored a late basket to finalize the score at 74-51
