Wingate student-athletes record a 3.26 fall departmental GPA

Wingate, N.C.----On the heels of the most successful fall in the school's sports history, Wingate University's 695 student-athletes experienced great triumphs in the classroom as well. The Bulldogs' fall cumulative GPA is a 3.26, up from 3.21 in the fall of 2021.

"While the fall of 2022 was highlighted by historic performances from many sports individually and collectively with our LEARFIELD Directors' Cup standing, the true highlight is the championship effort given in the classroom by our student-athletes across 24 sports," Wingate director of athletics Kelley Kish says.

"We take pride in the value Wingate student-athletes place on learning from our faculty, preparing for life after graduation and building upon last year's 3.21 GPA," Kish says. "Our staff has the honor to work with our extremely motivated, competitive and committed Bulldog student-athletes…their excellence in the classroom inspires us each day."

Digging deeper

Digging deeper into the academic data, 112 WU student-athletes had a 4.00 GPA in the fall. More than one-in-three Bulldogs (39.71 percent) posted a 3.50 GPA or better during the fall term. Forty-seven percent of the 695 Wingate student-athletes were named to the Dean's List (3.30 GPA or higher), while 24 percent were named to the President's List (3.80 GPA or better).

What They Are Saying
Wingate provost Dr. Jeff Frederick

"Once again, Wingate University student-athletes have met the standard in the classroom with the overwhelming majority of our teams finishing the fall semester with a 3.0 or higher team GPA and the collective GPA landing at 3.26. More to the point, approximately one out of every six Wingate student-athletes finished with a 4.00. This excellence in the classroom, lab and studio also aligns with a record-breaking fall campaign on the field, track, court and pool. This convergence is no accident."

Wingate Donald B. Haskins professor of business analytics and FAR Dr. Barry Cuffe

"Congratulations to our Wingate University student-athletes! As a long-time Faculty Athletics Representative (FAR), these results have come to be expected as commonplace…but, the efforts of the faculty, administration, coaching staffs and the student-athletes to make this happen is always worthy of note and enthusiastic celebration. Providing the opportunity for this sort of recognition is our mission; consistently delivering on it is what makes the student-athlete experience at Wingate University so special."
