‘Dogs ride hot start to 82-71 victory over Newberry

Wingate, N.C.----The Wingate University Bulldogs scored 18 of the first 20 points Wednesday afternoon, rolling to an 82-71 victory over Newberry College in South Atlantic Conference men's basketball action in Cuddy Arena. Wingate improves to 9-4 overall and 4-1 in the SAC, while the Wolves fall to 8-6 overall and 1-3 in league play.

- Wingate shot 52 percent from the field; Newberry shot 40 percent
- The 'Dogs hit 11-of-31 threes while the Wolves went three-for-18 from deep
- Newberry held a 43-33 rebounding advantage and 26-11 edge in second-chance points

FIRST HALF

- Wingate jumped out to an 18-2 lead seven minutes in
- A Nixon three and Cottingham layup gave the 'Dogs a 9-0 lead
- Another Nixon three and Josh Massey layup made it 18-2 with just over 13 minutes to go
- A Drake Downs layup cut the lead to 14
- Buckets from Clark and Letino made it 26-7 with 9:55 to go
- A Three and a layup from Wilson pushed the Bulldog lead to 21 at the 7:26 mark
- Caleb Byrd's layup with 2:18 to go pulled the Wolves to within 14
- A Roberts layup with 40 seconds left made it 41-25
- Two free throws from Quandaveon McCollum cut the halftime advantage to 14

SECOND HALF

- Threes from Cottingham and Elmore pushed the lead to 16 early in the second half
- A Clark layup and dunk, along with an Elmore triple made it 61-37 with 15 minutes to go
- McCollum's bucket with 7:13 remaining trimmed the lead to 14
- The Wolves cut the lead to 11 with 4:54 remaining on a Drake Downs putback
- Nixon answered with a three to make it 76-62 with 4:28 remaining
- The Wolves got no closer than nine the rest of the way
