‘Dogs push winning streak to three with 31-13 win at Catawba

Salisbury, N.C.----The Wingate University Bulldogs jumped out to a 24-6 halftime lead Saturday night, rolling to a 31-13 victory at Catawba College in South Atlantic Conference football action. Wingate improves to 4-2 overall and 3-1 in the SAC, while the Indians fall to 3-3 overall and 1-3 in league play.

KEY STATS

- Catawba had 323 passing yards and 19 rushing yards for 342 yards of offense
- Wingate had 152 passing yards and 140 rushing yards to put up 292 total yards
- The Indians had 15 first downs compared to Wingate's 14
- WU was four-for-10 on third down; Catawba went five-for-15

FIRST QUARTER

- Kyron Thomas started the game with a 37-yard kickoff return to set WU up at the Catawba 43
- Bentley hit Trevor Grant for 15 yards to set up a first and 10 at the 30
- Brooks hit McCray for 29 yards to get it to the Catawba one
- Wilson punched it in to give the 'Dogs the early 7-0 lead
- The 'Dogs added a 53-yard drive to go on top by two touchdowns
- Bernard's 14-yard run to the Bulldogs inside the Catawba 40
- Bentley hit Jones for 40 yards on third and 14 to get it to the two
- Barnett punched it in to make it 14-0

SECOND QUARTER

- The Indians got on the board two minutes into the second quarter
- Preston Brown hit Jordan Mitchell from six yards out to make it 14-6
- The Bulldogs answered with a field goal to go on top by 11
- A 14-yard Jones catch, followed by a 17-yard Wilson run got it to Catawba territory
- Bentley's 16-yard run got it down to the 25
- Bonesteel drilled a 37-yard field goal to make it 17-6 with 8:42 to go
- A Fleming sack set up a third and long that led to a Catawba punt from the 32
- White blocked the punt into the end zone, then covered it up for the score
- The Bulldogs took a 24-6 lead into halftime

THIRD QUARTER

- The Indians scored on their opening drive to trim the deficit back to 11
- Brown hit Conner McCarthy for a 37-yard touchdown with 12:09 left to make it 24-13
- Wingate had the immediate answer
- Barnett's 10-yard run set the 'Dogs up at the Catawba 25 after the Indians failed to recover an onside kick
- Bentley then connected with Jones for a 25-yard touchdown to make it 31-13 with 11 minutes left
