Wingate drops 53-52 overtime contest at Belmont Abbey

Belmont, N.C.----The Belmont Abbey College Crusaders got the game-winning bucket in the final second of overtime Saturday afternoon, prevailing 53-52 over Wingate University in NCAA Division II women's basketball action. The Crusaders improve to 7-5 overall, while the Bulldogs fall to 7-4 on the season.  

KEY STATS

- Belmont Abbey shot 35 percent from the field, going zero-for-12 from three-point range
- Wingate shot 28 percent from the field, going four-for-17 from deep (24 percent)
- The Bulldogs held a 40-37 rebounding advantage and 17-6 edge in second-chance points
- The contest featured 16 ties and nine lead chances, with neither team leading by more than four
- The Crusaders scored 23 points off 21 Wingate turnovers
- BAC outscored the Bulldogs 34-18 in the paint
- Belmont Abbey was 13-for-13 at the free throw line; Wingate went 16-for-22

KEY BULLDOGS

- Hannah Clark had 15 points, four rebounds, three assists and two steals
- Jaia Wilson added 12 points and five boards on five-of-seven shooting from the field
- Trinity Breedlove registered nine points, 12 rebounds, three blocks and a steal
- Laney Beale contributed five points, four boards, two assists and a steal
- Emily Hege and Anna Baraldi added four points each; Lia Anderson had three points and four boards

FIRST QUARTER

- An Abigail Crain jumper at the midway point gave BAC an 8-4 lead
- Two free throws and a layup from Clark tied it at eight
- A Riley James three-point play made it 11-8, but Wilson tied it at 11 with a triple
- Baraldi's layup with 37 seconds left tied it at 13
- Hege's free throw with three seconds to go gave Wingate a 14-13 lead

SECOND QUARTER

- Clark's jumper in the opening minute gave the 'Dogs a three-point lead
- A Clark triple at the midway point put the Bulldogs on top 21-17
- A Cate Schieber layup with 1:41 to go tied it at 21
- Clark answered with a triple but a Peyton Nation bucket made it 24-23 at halftime

THIRD QUARTER

- Buckets from Breedlove and Beale gave the 'Dogs a 29-25 lead at the 6:47 mark
- The Crusaders scored the next six, taking a 31-29 advantage on a Crain layup
- A James jumper with 1:37 to go put Belmont Abbey on top by four
- Two Anderson free throws in the final second cut the lead to two heading to the fourth

FOURTH QUARTER

- Breedlove put Wingate on top with a layup a minute into the fourth
- A Janiah Shular layup with 8:20 to go gave BAC a 39-36 advantage
- A Clark layup and Wilson triple put the 'Dogs on top by two with six minutes to go
- Shular tied it at 43 with a layup with 3:30 remaining
- Beale's jumper put the 'Dogs back on top, but a James jumper with 2:12 to go tied it at 45
- Neither team was able to score in the final two minutes, sending it to overtime

OVERTIME

- A Wilson jumper and three Hege free throws gave the Bulldogs a 50-47 lead with 1:31 to go
- Two free throws from Catherin Hendershott with 1:11 remaining made it a one-point game
- Breedlove answered with two free throws with 57 seconds left to make it 52-49
- Crain's layup with 44 seconds to go pulled the Crusaders back within a point
- Both teams missed their next shots, with Wingate getting the rebound off the BAC miss with 18 seconds left
- A WU turnover gave it back to the Crusaders
- Riley buried the jumper with a second left to give Belmont Abbey the victory

UP NEXT

- Wingate is back in action Wednesday, traveling to Newberry for a 5:30 p.m. start
- The Bulldogs return home Saturday to host Tusculum at 2 p.m.
