‘Dogs push winning streak to eight with 72-66 victory over Carson-Newman

Wingate, N.C.----The Wingate University Bulldogs closed out the game by scoring 12 of the final 18 points Saturday afternoon, picking up a big 72-66 victory over Carson-Newman University in South Atlantic Conference women's basketball action on Senior Day in Cuddy Arena. Wingate wins its eighth straight, improving to 19-6 overall and 12-4 in the SAC. The Eagles fall to 15-10 overall and 10-5 in league play.

FIRST QUARTER

- The 'Dogs outscored the Eagles 24-10 over the first 10 minutes
- Troutman had six early points as Wingate jumped out to a 9-0 lead
- A Campbell Penland free throw cut the lead to eight, but a Hege triple made it 14-3
- Harli Smith's layup at the 3:44 mark pulled C-N within seven
- Clark answered with a triple to put the lead back in double figures
- Leah Barringer knocked down a three with 1:50 to go to make it 20-8
- A Beale layup and two Jaia Wilson free throws in the final minute made it 24-10

SECOND QUARTER

- C-N opened the quarter on an 8-2 run, cutting the lead to eight on a Keeleigh Rogers layup
- A Laura Kozo bucket at the midway point of the quarter gave Wingate a 30-18 lead
- The Eagles scored the last eight points of the half, with a Tori Rutherford layup making it 30-26

THIRD QUARTER

- Penland's layup two minutes in pulled the Eagles within a point
- Beale's jumper pushed the lead back to three
- Penland's three at the 5:37 mark gave Carson-Newman a 38-36 advantage
- Buckets from Troutman and Kozo tied it at 40
- Penland's jumper put the Eagles back on top by two, but a Clark jumper and two Troutman free throws gave WU the lead
- Penland buried a three with 47 seconds left to put C-N on top by two
- Clark answered with two free throws to make it 49-49 heading to the fourth

FOURTH QUARTER

- A Braelyn Wykle three gave Carson-Newman a 52-49 lead in the opening minute
- Hege answered with three straight buckets, putting the 'Dogs on top 55-52 with 8:14 to go
- Penland answered with a three and a layup to give the Eagles a 57-55 advantage
- A Sullivan three and Troutman bucket gave Wingate the 60-57 lead with 5:35 remaining
- Smith tied it at 60 with a jumper at the 3:53 mark
- Troutman and Hege answered with jumpers to put the Bulldogs back on top by four
- Beale's layup with two minutes left made it 66-61
- Penland's layup with 1:15 remaining pulled C-N back within one
- Sullivan answered with two free throws to make it 68-65
- A Penland free throw cut the lead back to two
