WU pitching strikes out 21 as #12 Bulldogs roll in home opener

Wingate, N.C.----The 12th-ranked Wingate University Bulldogs had four pitchers combine for 21 strikeouts Thursday night, rolling to a 9-1 victory over the University of Charleston in NCAA Division II baseball action at Ron Christopher Stadium. Wingate improves to 2-2 overall, while the Golden Eagles fall to 0-1.

- The 'Dogs had six of the seven extra-base hits and the only two homers
- The Bulldogs left 12 on base; the Golden Eagles stranded nine

- Motsinger lined a one-out double to right
- He scored on an RBI double from King to make it 3-0

FIFTH INNING

- Drew Beckner had Charleston's first hit of the game, an RBI single up the middle to make it 3-1

SIXTH INNING

- A hit batsman and walk put two on with two outs for King
- He ripped an RBI single up the middle to push the lead back to three

SEVENTH INNING

- A Ricky Clark double, Adams single and McKay walk loaded the bases
- Motsinger crushed the first pitch of his at-bat over the fence in left center for a grand slam to make it 8-1

EIGHTH INNING

- McKay's two-out single started things in the eighth
- Simpson lined an RBI triple to left to make it 9-1

WRAPUP

- Brodersen got the win, moving to 1-1
- He allowed a run on two hits in 5 1/3 innings, striking out a career-high 12 and walking two
- He struck out eight of the first nine he faced, including seven in a row
- All four of Riehl's outs came via strikeout
- Three of Howard's four outs were strikeouts, while two of Carpenter's three outs were strikeouts
- Ethan Soderna took the loss, allowing four runs on five hits in 5 2/3 innings, striking out eight and walking three
