Six Bulldogs invited to NCAA indoor track and field national championship meet

Indianapolis, Ind.----The Wingate University indoor track and field team will send six student-athletes to the NCAA Division II indoor national championship meet March 10-11 at the Virginia Beach Sports Center in Virginia Beach, Virginia. Bulldog freshman Hamza Chahid leads the way, as he will compete in two events: the men's 3000 meters and the men's Distance Medley Relay (DMR).
 
Chahid will be joined in the DMR by junior Jakob Rettschlag, sophomore Lars Laros and freshman Deon Sumpter. Freshman Tyler Morris will compete in the men's triple jump, while graduate student Moena Battle will vie for a national championship in the women's high jump.
 
Hamza Chahid
 
- Chahid is the No. 4 seed in the men's 3000 meters, thanks to his time of 8:01.79
- He achieved this mark during his WU debut in the Camel City Invitational at the JDL Fast Track
- Chahid won the Camel City Invite 3000 meters race, outrunning 86 other competitors
- He won the mile and the 3000 meters at last weekend's South Atlantic Conference indoor meet
- The SAC Freshman of the Year is the only SAC and/or Southeast Region runner in this event
- Colorado Mines sophomore Loic Scomparin is the No. 1 seed with his time of 7:51.84
 
Distance Medley Relay
 
- Wingate is the No. 3 seed in the men's DMR, thanks to a time of 9:40.74
- The Bulldogs earned this mark at the Boston University Valentine Invitational on Feb. 10
- Rettschlag is making his second appearance on the national stage (first indoors)
- He qualified for the 1500 meters at the 2022 NCAA outdoor championships in Michigan
- Chahid, Laros and Sumpter are first-time NCAA national qualifiers
- Wingate is the only SAC and/or Southeast Region quartet in this event
- Adams State (Colo.) is the No. 1 seed with a time of 9:35.50
 
Tyler Morris
 
- Morris is the No. 12 seed in the men's triple jump, thanks to his mark of 15.15 meters
- He achieved this mark at the Virginia Military Winter Classic on Friday, Jan. 27
- Morris won the VMI Winter Classic triple jump, besting 24 other competitors
- He is the only SAC and/or Southeast Region performer in this event
- Adams State senior Papay Glaywulu is the No. 1 seed with his mark of 16.61 meters
 
Moena Battle
 
- Battle is the No. 7 seed in the women's high jump, thanks to her mark of 1.75 meters
- She achieved this mark at the Virginia Military Winter Classic on Friday, Jan. 27
- Battle won the VMI Winter Classic high jump, outdistancing 35 other competitors
- The 1.75 meter effort tied the WU indoor school record, shared with current assistant coach Vanisha Wilshire
- Battle won the high jump at last weekend's South Atlantic Conference indoor meet
- She cleared 1.68 meters at the JDL Fast Track to claim the SAC gold medal
- Battle was an NCAA indoor All-American in 2022, while competing for Emmanuel (Ga.)
- She cleared 1.73 meters to take sixth-place in the 16-person field at the '22 event
- New Mexico Highlands freshman Ahshareah Enoe is the No. 1 seed for the 2023 event
- Her top mark is 1.85 meters from Western State's Mountaineer Open in December

- Six student-athletes are the most Wingate has sent to an indoor national championship meet
- The Bulldogs sent seven (three individuals, one relay team) to the 2018 outdoor NCAAs
- The DMR quartet and Moena Battle will compete on Friday
- The women's high jump begins at 4:35 p.m., while the DMR starts at 6:50 p.m.
- Tyler Morris and Hamza Chahid will compete on Saturday
- Morris begins the men's triple jump at 4:05 p.m., while Chahid will race in the 3000 meters at 6:10 p.m.

Wingate University
