‘Dogs clinch SAC Tourney hosting duties with sweep over UVA Wise

Wingate, N.C.----The Wingate University Bulldogs scored 30 total runs over the weekend and finished a sweep against the UVA Wise Cavaliers by sweeping Saturday's South Atlantic Conference baseball doubleheader at Ron Christopher Stadium, taking game one by a final score of 8-4 and the second game 14-3. WU improves to 29-16 overall with an 18-6 SAC mark, while the UVA Wise season ends at 15-33 and 4-20 in league play. The Bulldogs finish second in the SAC standings, earning hosting duties for next week's SAC Tournament.

GAME ONE | WINGATE 8, UVA-WISE 4

KEY STATS
 
- UVA Wise out-hit Wingate 11-10 in the contest
- The Bulldogs had five of the seven extra-base hits with three doubles and two homers compared to the Cavaliers' two doubles 
- UVAW left 10 on base while WU stranded nine
- Wingate had the only stolen base
- WU pitching struck out eight with one walk; Wise struck out nine and walked five

KEY BULLDOGS

- Sean Barnett led the lineup with two hits, scoring two runs and driving in two with a double and homer
- Andrew Motsinger collected two hits and scored a run
- Brett Adams drove in two runs and scored one in a one-for-four day at the plate 
- Lane Rhodes went one-for-two and drove in a pair of runs
- Austin Mitchell allowed just two earned runs over 5 2/3 innings of work while striking out four

SECOND INNING

- Barnett was hit by a pitch to lead off the frame, then moved to second base on a passed ball
- Ricky Clark got WU on the scoreboard first, bringing in Barnett on an RBI double down the right field line
- Isaiah Williams-Rhem followed with a walk, while two batters later Clark was able to score on a wild pitch
- Rhodes came to the plate and singled up the middle to plate Motsinger and Williams-Rhem, handing the 'Dogs a 4-0 advantage after two innings

THIRD INNING

- Nick Badgett singled to left field, then came around to score on a D'Sean Prinkleton RBI groundout to make it 4-1

SIXTH INNING

- The Cavaliers continued to chip away at the lead, with Jeb Hurst driving in Hunter Meador with an RBI single and Gavin Birkhimer plating Justin Reed to reduce Wingate's lead to 4-3
- WU bounced back in the bottom half of the inning with Carson Simpson and Motsinger stringing two singles together to start the frame
- After Rhodes used a sacrifice bunt to advance the runners, Seaver King was hit by a pitch to load the bases
- Adams worked a walk to bring in Simpson and extend the lead to 5-3 

EIGHTH INNING

- King opened the Wingate eighth with a walk, then stole second to get in scoring position
- Michael Dansky grounded out in the next at-bat, pushing King to third
- Adams picked up an RBI single to score King, pushing WU to a 6-3 lead
- In the next at-bat, Barnett homered to right field, giving the 'Dogs an 8-3 advantage

NINTH INNING

- Badgett drove in Birkhimer with an RBI single

WRAPUP

- Mitchell recorded the win in his start, moving to 6-2 to finish his regular season
- He went 5 2/3 innings, allowing two earned runs on eight hits while striking out four
- Hunter Brooks took the loss, allowing four earned runs in three innings, with four hits, two walks, and two strikeouts

GAME TWO | WINGATE 14, UVA-WISE 3

- Wingate out-hit UVA Wise 12-5 in the game
- The 'Dogs had five of six extra-base hits in the game with three doubles and two homers, while the Cavaliers hit one home run 
- WU left eight on base; UVAW stranded five
- Wingate had the only stolen base in the game with one
- WU pitching struck out 10 with four walks; The Cavaliers struck out two and walked eight

KEY BULLDOGS

- Seaver King drove in a career-high six runs in a two-for-three night with a grand slam
- Mitch Farris also went deep in the win, going a perfect three-for-three with two runs and two RBI
- Simpson brought in two runs and scored one on his only hit of the night
- Motsinger got on base three times and scored three runs
- Barnett had a two-for-three night at the plate, picking up an RBI and scoring twice 
- Josh Dotson earned the win with seven strikeouts and no walks, allowing one earned run in four innings of work

FIRST INNING

- UVAW notched the game's first run on a DJ Dickson solo homer to go up 1-0
- Wingate responded right back with Adams bringing in Michael Dansky with an RBI double in the bottom of the inning
- Clark's sacrifice fly two batters later plated Adams to give the Bulldogs a 2-1 lead
- Farris added an RBI single to drive in Barnett, extending the lead to two

SECOND INNING

- Motsinger walked and stole second base to start the inning
- After Josh Haggerty drew a walk, King brought in Motsinger with a sacrifice fly and gave Wingate a 4-1 cushion

THIRD INNING

- Barnett and Farris opened the inning with a single and double respectively
- Simpson doubled home both runners, pushing Wingate's lead to 6-1
- After a UVAW pitching change, two straight walks loaded the bases for King, who connected on a grand slam, his 11th long ball of the year to open a 10-1 lead

FOURTH INNING

- Farris unloaded on a solo blast to open the frame, giving Wingate a 10-run cushion
- The big inning continued with Motsinger finding his way around the bases to score on King's infield single
- King came in when Barnett singled to third base, while Cameron Carraway delivered a pinch-hit RBI single to plate Dansky and put WU up 14-1

FIFTH INNING

- Badgett picked up another RBI by scoring Birkhimer on a fielder's choice, making it 14-2

SIXTH INNING

- Birkhimer used a sacrifice fly to plate Prinkleton for the final run of the day

WRAPUP

- Dotson earned the win, moving to 2-3 on the year
- He allowed a run on three hits in four innings, striking out seven without a walk
- Daniel Kanagy took the loss after going one inning, conceding four runs on two hits, walking three without a strikeout  

UP NEXT

- Wingate finishes the regular season at home in non-conference play
- The 'Dogs host Mount Olive Tuesday at 4 p.m.
- The Bulldogs then host SAC Tourney action this weekend, starting Friday
- Wingate will be the number two seed, hosting the three, six and seven seed in a three-day, double-elimination tournament
- The schedule is set up for two games Friday, three Saturday and one or two on Sunday
- The advancing team moves on to face the winner from the other half of the bracket, hosted by regular season SAC champion Newberry
- The full bracket and game times will be announced Sunday
