Bulldogs take commanding lead after first day of SAC outdoor championships

Anderson, S.C.----The Wingate University men's track and field team leads the 2023 South Atlantic Conference outdoor championships after Wednesday's opening day of competition. Wingate has 84 points, while second-place Lenoir-Rhyne has 36.5 points. Anderson University is hosting this year's extravaganza at the AU Track Complex.
 
Wingate men's highlights WEDNESDAY FINALS
 
- Wingate dominated the 10,000 meter run, claiming the top eight places
- Bastian Mrochen won the event with a time of 30:33.29
- Cas Kopmels (30:33.39) and Scott Nutter (30:33.40) finished second and third, respectively
- The Bulldogs claimed the gold, silver and bronze medals in the 3000 meter steeplechase
- Soheil Boufrizi won the 3000 steeplechase with his triumphant time of 9:13.19
- Brent Surratt was second (9:16.74), while Will Aitken was third (9:21.95)
- Josh Linington finished second in the hammer throw (53.79 meters)
 
Wingate men's highlights WEDNESDAY PRELIMINARIES
 
- Wingate had seven of the top eight times in the 1500 meters' preliminaries
- Hamza Chahid led the way with his time of 3:58.32
- Boufrizi was the next Bulldog (3:58.72), followed by Jan Bayona (3:58.74)
- Dennis Trukawka won the decathlon 100 meter dash with his time of 11.17
- He is third in the two-day decathlon event with his 3257 points
- Trukawka (4.00 GPA) was the SAC Elite 23 Award winner for indoor track
- Leo Freeland had the fastest time in the 800 meters' prelims (1:54.45)
- Jakob Rettschlag (1:55.75) and Ben Aris (1:56.75) will join Freeland in the 800 finals
- Elijah Compton qualified for the finals in both hurdling events
- Compton's times: 14.86 (110 meter hurdles) and 56.15 (400 meter hurdles)
- Tradon McBride will join Compton in the 110 finals, thanks to his time of 15.25
