Anderson, S.C.----The Wingate University women's track and field team captured its third South Atlantic Conference outdoor championship Thursday. Wingate scored 201.5 points, outdistancing second-place Lenoir-Rhyne by 49.5 points. Bulldog head coach
Matthew van Lierop was honored as the SAC Coach of the Year for women's outdoor track and field.
Â
Wingate won back-to-back SAC outdoor titles in 2017 and 2018. The Bulldogs finish a clean sweep for the 2022-23 academic calendar, as the Navy Blue and Vegas Gold-clad student-athletes won the 2022 SAC cross country championship and the 2023 SAC indoor track and field title, too. Anderson University hosted this year's SAC outdoor event at the AU Track Complex.

What They Are Saying
Wingate senior thrower
Danielle Crawford
Â
"This season was a struggle. I have been fighting a low back injury from the beginning. I'm very happy with the way I performed in the discus this year. I wish hammer and shot put would have gone better, but I know what I need to work on for next year. One last round!"
Â
"I have to say that I am proud of all my teammates for how they competed in the SAC outdoor championship. We worked hard all season long. I am going to miss our seniors greatly but I wish them all the best in the future."
Â
Wingate junior jumper
Valerie Daehler
"Entering the SAC meet, I was pretty excited to compete and showcase some of the things I've been working on during training. After indoor season, I knew that my teammates were going to show up and leave it on the track for conference and I was excited to be a part of this energy. Although I didn't jump as well as I'd hoped this week, I'm happy that I was able to score some points for my team. I want to thank my coaches for challenging me and for being confident in me. I am grateful for my teammates cheering for me as well."
Wingate graduate student hurdler
Abby Heath
Â
"It was a super exciting meet, as conference always is. Entering the 400 hurdles, I was really excited to have good competition and finally be able to perform the way I wanted to compete. Unfortunately, mistakes do happen and I ended up falling, but I got up and was able to run my way into a second-place finish, so I am extremely happy about this!"
Â
"As for the team, we all went in well prepared and with a positive mindset to do what we do best. It was so much fun cheering on my teammates and supporting each other—it makes the meet so much more enjoyable. We all performed very well. Several personal-best marks and a lot of hard work was rewarded. We are so happy to be able to come home with yet another SAC title and we look forward to what is next for us!"
Â
Wingate graduate student distance specialist
Lauryn Tumey Ursery Â
Â
"What an exciting weekend this has been for Wingate track and field. To see how far the team has come and to see how hard our coaches and student-athletes have worked is such an inspiration. I am blessed to have been part of this group these past six years and wouldn't have changed anything. With all the ups and downs and lessons learned, this team right now is unstoppable. I'm so excited to see where they go next."
