TRIPLE CROWN! No. 1 Wingate takes D2 East Regional crown for third straight year

Wake Forest, N.C.----For the third consecutive year, the No. 1 Wingate University women's triathlon team was the top NCAA Division II finisher in the USA Triathlon Collegiate East Regional qualifier at Sandling Beach Saturday. Three Bulldog student-athletes finished second, third and fourth to lead the Wingate charge.
 
Freshman Irmak Şereflioğlu finished second, thanks to her time of 1:00:50.8. Senior team captain Carla Larrabeiti was third (1:00:51.8), only one second behind her teammate. Freshman Paula Auschill claimed fourth place (1:01:07.3). Lenoir-Rhyne junior Sabrina Fleig was the top D2 competitor with her time of 1:00:07.8.

"The women's squad faced its toughest test this season and the best regional field since we started the program. The Bulldogs responded courageously. Newcomer Grace Nolan led the team out of the water, but more Wingate student-athletes followed. It was apparent on the bike that the team was riding strong, but I was more impressed by their run performance after the technical and fast ride."
 
Next on the horizon for Wingate women's triathlon
 
The 2024 Collegiate National Championships are slated for Saturday, Nov. 9 in Clermont, Florida. The fourth-year Wingate program has three podium finishes in three trips to the national championship event.
