Laura Holt named SAC Defensive Player of the Week

Rock Hill, S.C.----Wingate University junior defender Laura Holt has been named the WePlayed Sports South Atlantic Conference women's soccer Defensive Player of the Week, league officials announced Tuesday morning. Holt earns Player of the Week accolades for the first time in her career.

Holt led the Bulldogs to a big week in league play, as Wingate picked up three SAC wins in a six-day stretch. The 'Dogs started the week by shutting out Mars Hill 3-0 and Newberry 4-0, while capping the week with a 3-2 victory against Anderson to move to 7-1-2 overall and 6-1 in the SAC. The Bulldogs have won four straight and six of their last seven.

Holt helped anchor the Wingate defense that allowed just two goals in 270 minutes of action. The preseason second team All-SAC honoree played 263 minutes on the week. In addition to her defensive efforts, Holt scored her first career goal in the Newberry victory, converting a penalty kick in the second half against the Wolves.

Wingate is back in action Wednesday, traveling to Catawba to take on the #19 Indians at 5 p.m. in Salisbury. The 'Dogs are at Belmont Abbey on Saturday before returning home Oct. 23 to host UNC Pembroke at 5 p.m.
