'Dogs pick up big SAC win at Lenoir-Rhyne; hand Bears first loss of the year

Hickory, N.C.----The Wingate University Bulldogs overcame a first-set loss Wednesday night, then battled back from an 18-9 deficit in set four to prevail 3-1 at Lenoir-Rhyne University in South Atlantic Conference volleyball action. Wingate prevailed 19-25, 25-22, 25-16 and 25-22 to improve to 11-2 overall and 4-1 in the SAC, while the Bears fall to 14-1 overall and 3-1 in league play. 

KEY STATS

- Wingate had 60 kills and 22 errors in 152 attacks, hitting .250
- LR had 46 kills and 26 errors in 165 swings to hit .121
- The Bears had nine of the 13 aces
- Each team had 10 blocks
- The 'Dogs held a 70-64 edge in digs
- WU hit .364 with 18 kills in set two, with 15 more kills in set three
- Wingate held LR under .100 in each of the last three frames and under .033 in the last two

- Cleaver's kill gave the Bears a early 6-2 lead
- Van Heyst's kill cut the lead to two at 9-7
- An Averie Dale ace stretched the lead back to five at 13-8
- A Lamphere kill and Morland block cut the lead to two at 16-13
- Vogen's kill made it 17-13, but Wingate scored the next five to take the lead
- Stacherski started it with back-to-back kills; Johnson capped it with a kill
- A Brooke Aeschliman kill tied it at 20
- Back-to-back Johnson kills sparked a 3-0 run that put the 'Dogs on top 23-20
- Morland's kill made it 24-21; Lamphere's kill ended the frame

SET THREE

- Kills from Van Heyst, Morland and Lamphere gave the Bullogs a 10-4 lead
- A kill and a block from Stacherski, along with a Saye kill made it 14-5
- Kills from Morland, Johnson and Van Heyst gave the 'Dogs a 20-12 cushion
- A block and kill from Morland made it 24-16; Jamerson's ace ended the set

SET FOUR

- Three Dale aces gave LR a 9-3 lead
- Two Morland kills cut the lead to three at 11-8
- LR scored the next six, taking a 17-8 lead on Vogen's kill
- A Saye kill and Maggie Fillauer ace cut the lead to five at 19-14
- Saye's kill cut it to four at 20-16, but Aeschliman's kill made it 21-16
- The Bulldogs scored the next six to take the lead
- Jamerson had an ace, with Lamphere and Van Heyst adding kills in the spurt, making it 22-21
- Peter's kill tied it at 22
- Morland answered with a kill, while a Lenoir-Rhyne error made it 24-22
