Bulldogs stifle Cavaliers in 33-0 SAC road win

Wise, Va.----The Wingate University defense was as advertised Saturday afternoon, holding UVA Wise to just 70 total yards, including -1 rushing yard in a dominant 33-0 victory in South Atlantic Conference football action. The Bulldogs improve to 3-1 overall and 1-1 in the SAC, while the Cavaliers fall to 2-2 overall and 1-1 in league play. Wingate shut out UVA Wise for the second straight year, outscoring the Cavs 60-0 the last two seasons. The 'Dogs have three shutouts over the last two seasons and four the last three years.

- Wingate used a two-play, 71-yard touchdown drive to take a 9-0 lead
- Barnett started it with a 16-yard run
- Bentley hit Estronza on the next play for a 55-yard touchdown strike, making it 9-0 at the 13:16 mark
- The 'Dogs went 79 yards on nine plays to add to their lead late in the half
- Back-to-back 15-yard runs from Wallace and Bentley got it into UVA Wise territory
- Bentley hit Matt Flanders for 13 yards to get it to the 23
- Corey Siemer's 22-yard reception got the 'Dogs to the one
- Bentley punched it in to make it 16-0 with 1:32 remaining

THIRD QUARTER

- The Bulldogs went 71 yards on four plays to extend the lead on their opening drive of the half
- Barnett went for 41 yards on the first play of the drive, followed by McCray's 11-yard catch
- Barnett ran it in from eight yards out to make it 23-0
- The Wingate defense added to the lead on the ensuing Cavs possession
- White forced a fumble at the 46, which was picked up and taken in for a touchdown by Perry
- The defensive score put the 'Dogs on top 30-0
- UVA Wise had its best chance to score after picking off a tipped pass and returning it to the WU 10
- Russell had a tackle for loss on the first play of the drive, pushing Wise back to its 18 yard line
- The Cavs settled for a 33-yard field goal, which was blocked by Darius Randolph

FOURTH QUARTER

- Bonesteel scored the only three points of the final frame
- His 22-yard field goal gave the 'Dogs a 33-0 advantage in the opening minute of the fourth
