‘Dogs strike early in 11-3 victory at Newberry in SAC opener

Newberry, S.C.----The Wingate University Bulldogs plated 11 runs in the first three innings Friday night, rolling to an 11-3 victory at defending regular season SAC champion Newberry College in South Atlantic Conference baseball action. The Bulldogs improve to 4-4 overall and 1-0 in the SAC, while the Wolves fall to 2-6 overall and 0-1 in league play.

- The 'Dogs had three of the four extra-base hits including all three homers
- The Wolves left 10 on base; the Bulldogs stranded six

- Sean Barnett was two-for-five with a homer and four RBI to lead the offense
- Cam Harris also homered, driving in three runs while scoring three times

- Brett Adams and Breon Ishmael each drove in a run

FIRST INNING

- Harris and Dansky drew back-to-back walks to start the game
- Barnett's RBI single plated Harris to get Wingate on the board
- An RBI double from Rhett Jolly in the bottom of the frame tied it at one

SECOND INNING

- Ishmael and Nygaard drew walks to start the second inning
- Harris connected on a three-run homer to right to make it 4-1
- A walk and back-to-back singles loaded the bases with no outs in the bottom of the frame
- Henry Gibson scored on a double play, but that would be the only run of the frame, making it 4-2

THIRD INNING

- The 'Dogs scored seven times in the third to take a nine-run lead
- Barnett and Clark started the frame with back-to-back solo shots, making it 6-2
- Andrew McKay was hit by a pitch, then stole second
- He scored on Ishmael's RBI groundout to give the Bulldogs a five-run cushion
- Singles from Naylor and Nygaard, along with a walk loaded the bases
- Dansky's RBI single drove home Naylor, while an Adams sacrifice fly plated Nygaard to make it 9-2
- Barnett drove in the final two runs of the frame, reaching on an error to make it 11-2

WRAPUP

- Hoover got the win, moving to 3-0 on the season
- He allowed two runs on four hits in five innings, striking out three and walking three
- Walls allowed a run on three hits in four innings of work, striking out four and walking two
- Tyler Chinpire took the loss, allowing four runs on two hits in 1 1/3 innings, striking out one and walking four
