Wingate earns two first team All-American awards on final night of NCAAs

Geneva, Ohio----The Wingate University women's swimming team earned two first team All-American honors on the fifth and final night of the NCAA Division II swimming and diving national championships Saturday. Lake Erie College and the Greater Cleveland Sports Commission served as hosts for this event, held inside the SPIRE Institute Aquatics Center.
 
Women's 200 Backstroke
 
Bulldog junior Marta Beesmans Barquero finished fifth in the women's 200 Backstroke with her time of 1:58.11. Colorado Mesa sophomore Agata Naskret won the race with her gold-medal time of 1:55.30.
 
Women's 400 Freestyle Relay
 
Wingate held its seed, finishing third in the women's 400 Freestyle Relay with a bronze-medal time of 3:20.99. Team members included Nina Azirovic, Amanda Wenhold, Lucie Andrews and Natalia Dwojak. The school record in this event is 3:20.77, set at the 2017 NCAA Division II national championship meet.
 
Men's 1650 Freestyle
 
Wingate junior Miguel Marcos earned honorable mention All-American laurels, finishing ninth in the men's 1650 Freestyle with his time of 15:23.34. Wayne State (Mich.) freshman Khalil Ben Ajmia won the race, thanks to his time of 14:57.68.
 
Men's 200 Backstroke
 
Bulldog sophomore Ney Chagas Filho posted an honorable mention All-American swim in the men's 200 Backstroke with his time of 1:47.29. Colorado Mesa junior Ben Sampson set a new NCAA record with his victory, posting a new standard of 1:40.34.
 
Men's 400 Freestyle Relay
 
The Bulldogs concluded the meet with an honorable mention All-American swim in the men's 400 Freestyle Relay. Wingate recorded a time of 2:57.47. Team members included Manoel Silva, Mike Topchanalis, Ney Chagas Filho and Anton Witzell. Henderson State won the men's 400 Free Relay with its triumphant time of 2:52.81.
 
Final team standings
 
The Wingate women finished 11th on the team charts with 145 points. Nova Southeastern won the national championship with 487 points. Colorado Mesa finished second with 461.5 points. The Bulldog men finished 16th with 72 points. Tampa claimed the winners' crown with 473 points. Drury was second with 409 points.
