Joe Reich has announced several promotions within the Wingate University athletic administration staff.
Molick Scott has been promoted to Associate Athletic Director for External Operations and Capital Projects, while head women's lacrosse coach
Abby Wiley has been named an Assistant Athletic Director for Operations and Staff Development. This is in addition to last month's promotions, where
Erika Torrez was named the Deputy Athletic Director for Academic Services and Compliance and head men's soccer coach
Gary Hamill was named the Associate Athletic Director for Project Management.
"Erika is a fantastic administrator. Molick is a rising star in our profession," Reich says. "We wanted to put them in the best positions to maximize their positive affect our athletic department. Abby is so high-energy and will bring so much positivity to the admin team, excited to have her on board. Gary has just done so much for the University and the community in his time here, as national champion on the field and as the mayor of Wingate, adding his experience to the team will be great."
Scott began working at Wingate in May of 2022 as the Assistant AD for Administration and Capital Projects. He has been in charge of implementing gameday enhancement for all 26 Wingate athletic programs, while also working on corporate partnerships and sponsorships, bringing in several new sponsors throughout the community for Wingate athletics, as well as establishing relationships throughout the University during his tenure. Scott also works with Wingate's branding and licensing within the department and collaborating with the University marketing team.
Scott has worked on major capital projects, including the indoor hitting facility for baseball and softball while also working on future projects, Wingate's most recent five-year deal with Founder's Federal Credit Union, while also working with the development of the SMART Center for Athletic Excellence. He has also played a key role in student-athlete development, cultivating a series of professional and personal development workshops while also collaborating with counseling services on campus, promoting and education student-athletes on mental health.
Wiley has been at Wingate since 2018, when she took over as the head women's lacrosse coach for the Bulldogs. She will now add an administrative duties to her head coaching work load, working with international operations. Wiley's main focuses will be facility updates on the north side of campus, focusing on football, men's and women's lacrosse, field hockey and men's and women's track and field. She will also play a key role in overall staff development throughout the department.
During her seven years at Wingate, Wiley has turned the Bulldog women's lacrosse program into a powerhouse. The three-time SAC Coach of the Year has led Wingate to back-to-back regular season SAC titles and a SAC Tournament championship over the last two seasons, going 19-1 in league play over the last two years while piling up a program-record 17 victories in 2023. Wiley also guided the 'Dogs to their first-ever NCAA tournament bid in 2022. The Bulldogs cracked the top 25 for the first time ever in 2022, while cracking the top 10 in 2023, climbing to as high as #8.
Torrez joined the Wingate staff in 2021 as the Associate AD for Compliance, then in 2022 was promoted to the role of Senior Woman Administrator. Torrez has many high-level duties with the Bulldogs, with overseeing the day-to-day compliance operations for over 900 student-athletes at Wingate a big focus. In addition, she is the direct contact for eight sports and assists with gameday administration.
Torrez serve as the advisor for Wingate's Student-Athlete Advisory Committee (SAAC), while also assisting with NIL oversight and activities. She serves on the Athletics Committee with various faculty members, and oversees and submits NCAA bids. Torrez has played a key role in Wingate hosting NCAA regionals for volleyball, softball, baseball and soccer, while also playing a huge role in the Bulldogs hosting the 2023 NCAA Division II men's and women's soccer national championships in Matthews.
Hamill has spent the last 32 years as the head men's soccer coach at Wingate. He will now add administrative duties to his hugely successful coaching portfolio. As the Associate AD for Project Management, Hamill will play a key role in the future plans of Wingate University around campus. The main upcoming projects he will be leading include the building of Wingate's new beach volleyball courts, as well as the development of the SMART Center for Athletic Excellence. He will play a role in everything involved with the future master plan for Wingate athletics.
Hamill is one of the all-time great NCAA soccer coaches, piling up 378 victories for the Bulldogs, with 169 SAC victories. He ranks in the top 25 for all-time wins in NCAA Division II history, and is in the top 15 of active head coaches. The winningest coach in league history is a 10-time SAC Coach of the Year and four-time Region Coach of the Year. Hamill was named the 2016 National Coach of the Year, when he led the Bulldogs to the national title, the first NCAA team title in the history of Wingate or SAC athletics. The 'Dog have won back-to-back regular season SAC titles, dropping only two league games over the last two years.
This group will help enhance and administrative team that helps oversee one of the top athletic departments in all of NCAA Division II. The Bulldogs captured their 16th straight SAC Echols Athletic Excellence Award in 2024, piling up 18 SAC titles, which gives Wingate 38 conference championships over the last two years. The 'Dogs finished fourth in the NCAA LEARFIELD Cup standings, their second straight top-five finish, highlighted by the men's cross country national championship. The Bulldogs have won three of the four NCAA D2 team national titles in SAC history, all coming since 2016. Wingate leads the league in all-time Excellence Awards, SAC titles, NCAA championships, Academic All-America honorees, SAC Scholar-Athletes, SAC Players of the Year, SAC Coaches of the Year, SAC Athletes of the Year and SAC President's Award winners.
