No. 2 Wingate women’s triathlon overcomes adversity to take second in Virginia

RESULTS | 2024 Robious Landing Duathlon

Midlothian, Va.----The NCAA Division II No. 2 Wingate University women's triathlon team finished second in the Robious Landing Duathlon Sunday. NCAA Division I No. 8 East Tennessee State won the event with 378 points. The South Atlantic Conference member Bulldogs claimed second place with 347 points.

Due to the lingering effects of Hurricane Helene, the swimming portion of the race was cancelled. With the switch to a duathlon, the Wingate student-athletes completed a 20K (four-lap) draft-legal bike ride and a 5K run consisting of trails and neighborhood roads.

Wingate had five student-athletes in the top 15. Senior team captain Dylan Kirchner led the way, finishing seventh with her time of 59:23.45. Junior Katja Krenn was next, taking eighth place with her time of 59:42.92. Senior Maddie Gagnon was 11th with her time of 1:00:28.73.

Fifteen teams and 79 student-athletes competed in the Robious Landing Duathlon. Wingate defeated five NCAA Division I schools: third-place Duquesne, fourth-place Navy, fifth-place Delaware State, sixth-place Wagner and 12th-place Hampton. The Bulldogs outdistanced three NCAA Division II schools, including 11th-place finisher and SAC rival Newberry.

What They Are Saying
Wingate University head triathlon coach Nick Radkewich

"Our ladies gave everyone a glimpse at our depth today. We swam a different squad than we did at the Davidson Collegiate Cup two weeks ago. Our team overcame the weather and the change in format to the duathlon. They did great!"

"I am happy with our overall performance. We had three bicycle crashes…and these young ladies bravely fought back. We met the challenges face-to-face and we did a great job to take second place."

"The highlight for us today is the performance of our senior team captain Dylan Kirchner. She was injured last fall…and she didn't start full training until right before the '24 season started. Dylan has improved every week. She has served us well as our captain, leading the squad in significant ways. I am very proud of her."
