Elijah Holmes has been named the WePlayed Sports South Atlantic Conference Offensive Player of the Week, while placekicker
Caleb Bonesteel is the Special Teams Player of the Week, league officials announced Monday afternoon. Holmes earns the honor for the first time in his career, while Bonesteel take home Player of the Week accolades for the second time this season and sixth time in his career.
The duo helped lead the Bulldogs to an impressive 27-20 road win at #22 Emory & Henry Saturday afternoon. The victory moved the 'Dogs to 5-2 on the season and 3-2 in league play, while handing the Wasps their first home loss of the season.
Holmes was 17-for-28 on Saturday, throwing for 279 yards and a touchdown. He added a 17-yard rushing touchdown on the afternoon. His touchdown run put the 'Dogs on top 10-3 in the first quarter, while his 14-yard TD pass to Jaylen Himes gave Wingate a 20-10 advantage in the third quarter. Holmes also connected on a 60-yard pass to Xavier Jackson late in the second quarter.
Boneteel had another perfect day of kicking, connecting on all three PATs and a pair of field goals. The 2024 SAC title game MVP started the scoring with a 37-yard field goal with 5:36 left in the opening quarter. He added a 27-yard field goal in the final two minutes of the half, giving the Bulldogs a 13-10 halftime advantage.
Holmes ranks fourth in the SAC with 231 passing yards per game, completing 64.3 percent of his passes, good for third in the conference. He also ranks third in the SAC with 14 passing touchdowns, throwing just one interception on the year. Holmes has added 212 rushing yards and three touchdowns on the ground. Bonesteel has connected on eight of 12 field goals this year. That includes four field goals of at least 40 yards, with a long of 47 on the year. Bonesteel has connected on all 28 PATs this season.
Wingate is back in action Saturday, traveling to Anderson for a 2 p.m. start. The Bulldogs return home Saturday, Nov. 1, hosting Lenoir-Rhyne at 3 p.m.
