Francis Marion rallies for 62-56 victory over Wingate

Pembroke, N.C.----The Francis Marion University Patriots outscored Wingate University 17-6 in the fourth quarter Saturday afternoon en route to a 62-56 victory in NCAA Division II women's basketball action. Both teams move to 1-1 on the season.

KEY STATS

- Francis Marion shot 33 percent from the field, going 10-for-25 from three-point range (40 percent)
- Wingate shot 38 percent from the field, connecting on two-of-14 from deep (14 percent)
- The 'Dogs held a 47-31 rebounding advantage; each team had 10 second-chance points

- Two buckets from Montiel, along with a Beale triple helped Wingate jump out to a 9-2 lead three minutes in
- Buckets from Beale and Anasia Harvey put the 'Dogs on top 15-5 at the 4:41 mark
- A Bree Hughes layup a minute later made it 17-7
- Mackenzie Feagin nailed a three with 1:23 to go to cut the lead to six
- Shorma's jumper made it 21-13, but two Kiara Croskey free throws in the final seconds cut the lead to six

SECOND QUARTER

- A Feagin triple and Angel Walker free throw tied it at 21 at the 8:22 mark
- Beale answered with a three, but another Feagin triple gave FMU a 26-24 lead
- Alexandra Merceron's bucket with 4:14 to go in the half tied it at 28
- A Terriana Gray layup with a minute left gave the Patriots a 34-29 advantage
- A layup and two free throws from Montiel in the final 11 seconds cut the halftime lead to one at 34-33

THIRD QUARTER

- A Tyra Myers three gave Francis Marion a 39-35 lead at the 8:25 mark
- WU scored the next eight, getting four points from Bacon and a Shorma layup to take a 43-39 lead
- A steal and a layup by Montiel gave the 'Dogs a five-point lead at the midway point of the quarter
- A Croskey triple trimmed the lead to two
- A Montiel layup and Bacon free throw gave Wingate a 50-45 lead heading to the fourth

FOURTH QUARTER

- Merceron's layup a minute in gave the 'Dogs a 52-45 advantage
- FMU scored the next 10, taking a 55-52 lead on a Uriah Jennings layup with 5:22 to go
- Beale's layup at the 2:50 mark cut the lead to one
- Croskey made two free throws with 26 seconds left to give FMU a 57-54 advantage
- Beale's layup cut the lead back to one with 12 seconds to go
- FMU made five free throws in the final 12 seconds to clinch the win
