Wingate women finish ’25 NCAAs on podium; Bulldogs take 13th place overall

Indianapolis, Ind.----The Wingate University women's swimming team finished the '25 NCAA Division II national championships in a familiar place…on the podium. The Bulldogs took eighth place in the meet-concluding 400 Freestyle Relay inside the IU Natatorium on the campus of IU Indianapolis, as part of the Division II championships festival.
 
Wingate finished the '25 NCAA championships with 115 points, good enough for 13th place out of 39 teams. In one of the most dramatic finishes in recent memory, Nova Southeastern rallied to take the team title from Drury. The NSU Sharks had 475 points, while the Drury Panthers had 463 points.
 
Women's 400 Freestyle Relay
Team members: Natalia Dwojak, Nina Azirovic, Elizabete Paula Ozola, Lucie Andrews
 
- Two-year team captain Lucie Andrews' last touch gave WU its 3:21.80 time
- As usual, Andrews took the anchor leg; she swam a 49:53 time for 100 yards
- Juniors Natalia Dwojak and Nina Azirovic started the race for the Bulldogs
- Freshman Elizabete Paula Ozola swam the third leg, setting the stage for Andrews
- Andrews' 49.53 time was Wingate's fastest by a full second
- Dwojak (50.71), Azirovic (50.70) and Ozola (50.86) swam virtually identical times
- Nova Southeastern won the women's 400 Freestyle Relay (3:19.09)
 
Beesmans Barquero adds honorable mention All-American swim
 
- Wingate's team captain finished 15th in the 200 Backstroke Saturday
- She earned honorable mention AA honors, thanks to her time of 2:00.81
- Beesmans Barquero was one of three senior team captains for the Bulldogs
- The others were Lucie Andrews and Cornelia Almqvist
- The Wingate men's swimming team had three senior captains as well

- The Bulldogs will hit the books on Monday, as classes resume at 8 a.m.
- Wingate was named a fall '24 Scholar All-America team by the CSCAA
- The Bulldogs will celebrate One Day, One Dog Day of Service on Thursday, April 3
