‘Dogs bounce back to take down LMU and advance to championship Saturday

The top-seeded Wingate University dropped game one on day two of the South Atlantic Conference softball tournament 4-1 against second-seeded Lenoir-Rhyne University, then bounced back with a 5-0 victory against Lincoln Memorial University to advance to the final day of tourney action on Saturday. Wingate will take on Lenoir-Rhyne at 11 a.m. Saturday, needing a pair of wins against the Bears to claim the title.

- Lenoir-Rhyne out-hit Wingate 5-4
- The Bears had three of the four extra-base hits; the 'Dogs had the lone homer
- LR left five on base;  the Bulldogs stranded two
- WU pitching struck out six and walked four; LR had four strikeouts without a walk

KEY BULLDOGS

- Hannah Stevens homered to lead the offense
- Kaylee Hobgood added a pair of hits
- Damyia McFadden also notched a hit
- Lily Robbins struck out five in five innings of work, allowing just two runs
- Hali Scott added 1 1/3 innings of scoreless relief

FOURTH INNING

- Stevens led off the inning with a solo shot to center, giving Wingate a 1-0 lead

SIXTH INNING

- Madison Primm led off the sixth with a solo homer, tying it at one
- A Julia Mardigian RBI double gave LR a 2-1 lead
- Faith Carrigan capped the inning with an RBI double, making it 4-1

WRAPUP

- Carrigan got the win, allowing a run on four hits in seven innings of work, striking out four
- Robbins took the loss, allowing two runs on three hits in five innings, striking out five

- Stevens ripped a two-run double to left center to give the 'Dogs a 2-0 lead

- Singles from Brooks and Burns, along with a walk loaded the bases
- Burns scored when Davis reached on an error to push the lead to three
- Hobgood's RBI single put the 'Dogs on top 4-0

FIFTH INNING

- Scott launched a solo homer to left center to give the Bulldogs a 5-0 cushion

WRAPUP

- Huneycutt got the win, moving to 7-5 on the year
- The sophomore allowed eight hits in seven shutout frames, striking out two and walking one
- She worked out of threats all day, leaving the bases loaded twice while leaving two on base on two occasions
- Katie Fultz took the loss, allowing five runs on nine hits in five innings of work

UP NEXT

- Wingate and Lenoir-Rhyne will meet on championship Sunday
- Game one will begin at 11 a.m., moved up an hour due to the threat of rain late in the day
- If the Bulldogs win the first game, the teams will meet again for one more game Saturday afternoon
- If the Bears win the opener, they will claim the tourney title
