Montiel’s last-second bucket gives Wingate 59-57 victory at Newberry

Newberry, S.C.----Laura Montiel scored in the final second Wednesday evening, giving the visiting Wingate University Bulldogs a 59-57 victory at Newberry College in South Atlantic Conference women's basketball action. Wingate wins its fifth straight, improving to 10-5 overall and 5-4 in the SAC. The Wolves fall to 9-7 overall and 3-6 in league play.

- Ryann Hernandez's bucket at the 2:38 mark gave the Wolves a 13-9 advantage
- Isaac's two free throws with six seconds left made it 15-13

SECOND QUARTER

- A Beale layup and Maggie Shorma three put the 'Dogs on top 18-15 in the opening minute
- Daria Clat's layup at the 7:06 mark gave Newberry a one-point lead
- Two Beale buckets and a Merceron jumper gave Wingate a 24-19 edge with three minutes left
- Newberry scored the final seven points of the half, with a Leigha Harris triple making it 26-24

THIRD QUARTER

- Layups from Beale and Montiel gave the Bulldogs a 28-26 lead two minutes into the second half
- Montiel's steal and layup at the 5:43 mark extended the WU advantage to four
- Kent's three with 4:17 remaining tied it at 34
- Wingate scored the next eight, taking a 42-34 lead on a Bree Hughes triple at the 2:32 mark
- Two Rickell Brown free throws with 1:16 left cut the lead to four
- Harvey's layup with a minute left pushed the advantage back to six
- Jada Brown's free throw in the final minute made it 44-39 heading to the fourth

FOURTH QUARTER

- A Bacon three and Harvey layup gave Wingate a 51-41 lead at the 6:20 mark
- Newberry scored the next 12, taking a 53-51 lead on two Harris free throws with 1:53 to go
- Harvey's layup 30 seconds later tied it, but a Harris jumper put NC back on top by two
- Montiel knocked down two free throws with 50 seconds left, tying it at 55
- Montiel's steal gave the ball back to Wingate
- Bacon drew a foul and made both free throws, giving WU a 57-55 lead with 16 seconds remaining
- Brown got an offensive rebound on the other end, got fouled and made both free throws, tying it with four seconds left
- Wingate called a timeout, advancing the ball to midcourt
- Beale's inbound pass found Montiel at the basket, who banked home the game winner with under a second left
