Carson-Newman knocks off Wingate 86-75

Jefferson City, Tenn.----The Carson-Newman University Eagles shot over 50 percent from the field and from three-point range Saturday evening, prevailing 86-75 over visiting Wingate University in South Atlantic Conference men's basketball action. The Eagles improve to 15-9 overall and 10-8 in the SAC, while the Bulldogs fall to 11-13 overall and 6-12 in league play.

KEY STATS

- Carson-Newman shot 53 percent from the field, going 12-for-22 from three-point range (55 percent)
- Wingate shot 47 percent from the field, connecting on 12-of-27 from deep (44 percent)

- Another Browder bucket gave the Eagles a 24-17 cushion at the 7:24 mark
- A Stephen Quinn triple and two Derek Bradley free throws pulled the 'Dogs within two
- Matt Bilbrey buried a three with five minutes left to give C-N a 29-22 lead
- Another Bilbrey triple with 2:46 left made it 37-24
- Buckets from Godley and Campbell cut the lead to nine
- Colin Brown's layup with 20 seconds left gave the Eagles a 41-28 halftime lead

SECOND HALF

- A Browder three-point play four minutes in gave C-N a 50-35 advantage
- Threes from Godley and Miller pulled the Bulldogs within 10 at the 13:50 mark
- A Rylan Houck three pushed the Carson-Newman lead back to 15
- A three and a jumper from Pack, along with a Vick triple made it 63-55 with 10:35 left
- Godley buried a triple a minute later, pulling Wingate within five
- Houck's three gave C-N a 68-59 lead, but a Miller triple cut it back to six
- Miller knocked down a three at the 7:26 mark to make it 68-65
- Three Houck free throws with six minutes left extended the lead back to seven
- Two Bilbrey free throws a minute later made it 78-69
- Browder added two free throws with 1:52 left to push the lead back to double figures
- Wingate got no closer than nine the rest of the way
