Godley’s buzzer-beater gives Bulldogs thrilling 68-66 win over Newberry

Wingate, N.C.----Wingate University junior Alex Godley's putback just ahead of the buzzer Wednesday night gave the Bulldogs a thrilling 68-66 victory over visiting Newberry College in South Atlantic Conference men's basketball action in Cuddy Arena. Wingate improves to 12-13 overall and 7-12 in the SAC, while the Wolves fall to 10-15 overall and 6-13 in league play.

KEY STATS

- Wingate shot 44 percent from the field, going eight-for-26 from three-point range (31 percent)
- Newberry shot 40 percent from the field, connecting on 10-of-19 from deep (53 percent)
- The Wolves held a 39-33 rebounding advantage and 17-11 edge in second-chance points
- The 'Dogs scored 23 points off 14 Newberry turnovers

FIRST HALF

- A Malakhi Stremlow three gave Newberry an early 10-5 lead
- Wingate countered with a 19-0 run to take a 24-10 lead at the 9:48 mark
- A Campbell layup along with threes from Pack and Vick started the flurry
- Vick added a dunk and another triple in the spurt, while capping it with a layup
- Newberry scored the next eight, cutting the lead to six on two AJ Thompson free throws
- A Pack's triple with seven minutes left gave the 'Dogs a 27-18 lead
- A Gyterson Louissaint jumper at the 5:40 mark pulled the Wolves within five
- A Derek Bradley layup and two Jayden Street free throws stretched the lead back to nine
- A Drake Downs tipin with two minutes left made it 33-29
- An Owens rebound and layup at the buzzer gave Wingate a 36-29 halftime advantage

SECOND HALF

- Campbell's dunk opened the second half scoring, stretching the lead to nine
- Two Makhi Rivers free throws cut the lead to four with 16 minute left
- Back-to-back Campbell buckets gave the 'Dogs a 44-36 cushion
- The Wolves scored the next eight, tying it at 44 on a Stremlow layup at the 10:33 mark
- Downs knocked down a three to give Newberry a 47-45 lead
- Stephen Quinn answered with a triple to put the Bulldogs back on top
- Buckets from Campbell and Godley gave Wingate a 54-50 lead with 5:26 remaining
- A Kayzzin triple and two Brett Dent free throws gave the Wolves a one-point lead
- Miller buried a triple with 3:20 to go, giving the Bulldogs a 57-55 advantage
- Downs answered with a three, putting the Wolves back on top by one
- Vick's jumper with 2:44 left gave Wingate a 59-58 lead

- Downs knocked down a three with 11 seconds remaining, tying it at 66
- The 'Dogs came back down, with Nas Berry putting up a three in the final seconds
- His shot was off the mark, but Godley was there, getting the rebound and putting it back up in one motion, just beating the buzzer to give the 'Dogs the thrilling victory
