Groppuso’s 11th inning walk-off gives Wingate wild 17-16 win over Millersville

Wingate, N.C.----The Wingate University Bulldogs piled up 17 runs on 18 hits Sunday evening, prevailing 17-16 over Millersville University in NCAA Division II baseball action at Ron Christopher Stadium and Plyler Athletic Field. Wingate wins the three-game series, moving to 4-2 on the year, while the Marauders fall to 1-2 overall.

FIRST INNING

- An RBI single from Smith gave Millersville an early lead
- Groppuso drew a leadoff walk in the bottom of the frame, then went to second on Powell's single
- Courville drew a bases-loaded walk to plate Groppuso and tie it at one

SECOND INNING

- Singles from Evans, Benamati and Powell loaded the bases for the 'Dogs
- Sullivan's two-run double made it 3-1
- Karpowicz added a two-run single to push the lead to four

FOURTH INNING

- McCammon led off the inning with a solo shot to put the 'Dogs on top 6-1

FIFTH INNING

- A Groppuso walk and Powell single started the inning
- McCammon's sacrifice fly made it 7-1

SIXTH INNING

- Back-to-back bases-loaded hit batsmen plated a pair of runs for Millersville to make it 7-3
- Wingate answered with four in the bottom of the frame
- Hart drew a leadoff walk, then scored on a Benamati RBI single
- Powell drew a bases-loaded walk to make it 9-3
- Sullivan's two-run homer gave the Bulldogs an 11-3 cushion

SEVENTH INNING

- A three-run homer from Kirk made it 11-6
- Two walks started the bottom of the frame for Wingate
- Karpowicz scored after a Hart single and an error to make it 12-6
- A Passed ball and error allowed Courville and Hart to score to give WU an eight-run lead

EIGHTH INNING

- The Marauders scored four in the eighth to pull within four
- RBI singles from Williams an Ebbert highlighted the four-run Millersville rally
- Karpowicz connected on a solo shot in the bottom of the frame to make it 15-10

NINTH INNING

- Millersville scored six times in the ninth to take the lead
- A Hunsicker two-run double made it 15-13
- Chamberlin followed with an RBI double to pull Millersville within a run
- Yost followed with a two-out, two-run single to give MU a 16-15 advantage
- Evans singled to start the bottom of the inning, then stole second and third
- He scored on Powell's RBI groundout to tie it at 16

ELEVENTH INNING

- Hart started the bottom of the 11th with a double down the leftfield line
- Evans was then intentionally walked
- Both moved up on a balk, while an intentional walk to Cam Harris loaded the bases
- Groppuso blooped an RBI single to right, plating Hart to give the 'Dogs the victory


WRAPUP

- Parker got the win, moving to 1-0 on the year
- He tossed two shutout frames, allowing just one hit while striking out three in the 10th and 11th
- Nolan Kidwell took the loss, allowing a run on two hits in an inning, striking out two and walking two

UP NEXT

- Wingate is back in action Tuesday, hosting Mount Olive at 3 p.m.
