Virginia Beach, Va.----Wingate University senior
Luca Poppe won his second national championship in as many races Saturday, taking the 3000 meters title in the NCAA Division II indoor track and field championship meet inside the Virginia Beach Sports Center Saturday. Poppe won gold by 0.03 seconds with his triumphant time of 7:57.14.
On the team charts, the Wingate men finished a program-best third place with 50 points, only one point behind Grand Valley State with 51 points. Pittsburg State (Kansas) won the men's event with 75.5 points. The Bulldog women tied for 38th place with five points. Pittsburg State won the women's meet as well with 69.5 points.
Wingate has four first team All-Americans in men's 3000 meters
Poppe had much company on the podium Saturday, as three teammates joined him as first team All-Americans. Sophomore
Joaquin Campos finished third with his time of 7:57.76. Senior
Lars Laros took fifth place with his time of 7:57.93, while senior
Antonin Saint Peyre finished sixth with his time of 7:59.28. Poppe won the 5000 meters championship Friday night.
Klaus Scholz takes second place in the 800 meters with new school standard
Freshman
Klaus Scholz finished second in the men's 800 meters, setting a new school standard with his silver-medal time of 1:47.43. Scholz was making his first NCAA national championship appearance this weekend.
