No. 4 Wingate opens NCAA Championship play at Boulder Creek

Boulder City, Nevada----The No. 4 Wingate University men's golf team opened play Monday at the NCAA Division II Men's Golf Championship Monday, posting a two-over-par 290 team score during round one. The 20 teams and 108 student-athletes are competing at the Boulder Creek Golf Club.
 
Competing against the nation's top programs, the Bulldogs showcased aggressive scoring throughout the opening round, tying for third place in total birdies on day one of the championship.
 
Round one quick hits
 
- Lewis Beeden, the No. 2 ranked player in the nation, highlighted the round with an eagle on a par four
- Beeden finished the day at one-over-par while recording two birdies in addition to the eagle
- Mattia D'Errico paced the Bulldogs with a one-under-par opening round
- D'Errico recorded five birdies during round one
- Brandon Skidmore carded an even-par round
- Skidmore also tallied five birdies throughout the day
- Alfie Storer added depth for the Bulldogs
- Storer posted a two-over-par round with four birdies
- Cole Rouse contributed four birdies during the opening round
 
Team notes
 
- The Bulldogs posted a two-over-par team score in round one
- Wingate's 20 birdies during the opening day tied for third on the stat charts
- Wingate continues to position itself well against one of the strongest fields in Division II golf

The Bulldogs return to action Tuesday looking to build momentum as they continue competition at the NCAA Division II Men's Golf Championship. Wingate's first tee time is 4 p.m. EDT. The Bulldogs are paired with Cal State San Bernardino and five of the tournament's eight individuals from Hawaii Hilo, West Liberty, Winona State, Emmanuel (Ga.) and Colorado State Pueblo.
