Boulder City, Nevada----The No. 4 Wingate University men's golf team delivered one of the best rounds in program history Wednesday afternoon, firing a blistering 19-under-par team round to surge into third place after the third and final round of stroke play at the NCAA Division II Men's Golf Championship at Boulder Creek Golf Club.
Wingate's 19-under-par 269 is a new school standard for low round on a par-72 layout. In addition, the Bulldogs' third-round score is the best round of the 20-team 2026 NCAA championship tournament by two strokes. Florida Southern had the next-best round with its 17-under-par 271 posting Wednesday.
The Bulldogs climbed four spots on the leaderboard during round three and finished stroke play at 25-under-par overall, only two shots behind second-place Missouri-St. Louis. Wingate continued its dominance on the par fives throughout the week, leading the championship field at an incredible 46-under-par through 54 holes.
The Bulldogs also showcased elite scoring depth once again, totaling 68 birdies through three rounds while placing four golfers inside the top 35 individually.
With the finish, Wingate officially advances to the NCAA Division II medal match play portion of the national championship, beginning Thursday morning at 10:30 a.m. EDT with the quarterfinals. The Bulldogs have qualified for medal match play three years in a row.
Third-round quick hits
- Sophomore
Brandon Skidmore delivered one of the rounds of the day for the 'Dogs
- The No. 22-ranked player nationally fired a six-under-par 66 with five birdies and an eagle
- His six-under-par 66 equals his career-best round which he achieved twice as a freshman
- Skidmore climbed into a tie for eighth individually at nine-under-par for the tournament
- Freshman
Mattia D'Errico also posted a sensational round for Wingate
- D'Errico carded a career-best round of six-under-par 66 with seven birdies
- He moved into a tie for 10th place individually at eight-under-par overall
- D'Errico continues to dominate the par fives, leading the championship field at 13-under-par on par fives
- Senior
Lewis Beeden, the NCAA's No. 2 ranked player, added another strong performance
- Beeden fired a five-under-par 67 with six birdies
- He climbed 28 spots during the round and sits tied for 23rd overall at four-under-par
- Senior
Alfie Storer continued the momentum for the Bulldogs
- Storer carded a two-under-par round with six birdies
- He moved into a tie for 35th place individually
- Sophomore
Cole Rouse added depth to the Wingate lineup
- Rouse recorded three birdies during the third round
