No. 1 Wingate is second after opening round at NCAA South Regional

Cleveland, Tenn.----The top-ranked Wingate University women's golf team opened play at the NCAA Division II South Regional on Monday at Cleveland Country Club, finishing round one in second place at 11-over-par, trailing only No. 6 Lynn.
 
The Bulldogs showcased consistency throughout the day, leading the field in most pars while also recording the fewest bogeys and double bogeys, highlighting their steady approach on a challenging setup.
 
Round one quick hits
 
- Sophomore Olivia Meinecke (No. 3 national, No. 2 regional) led the 'Dogs in round one, lying first
- Meinecke fired a two-under-par 70 with four birdies
- She also led the field in par-four scoring at one-under-par
- Sophomore Amely Bochaton, the No. 1 ranked player in the nation, opened with a level-par 72 
- Bochaton recorded two birdies and stayed in contention near the top of the leaderboard
- Junior Jacqueline Gonzalez Howard added depth to the lineup
- She posted a five-over-par round in the opening day
- Sophomore Haley Paramore rounded out the counting scores
- She carded an eight-over-par round

- Wingate recorded eight total birdies in round one
- The Bulldogs sit in second place after 18 holes
- The team leads the field in pars, while minimizing mistakes better than the competition

What's next
 
- Due to expected weather conditions, teams will play 36 holes on Tuesday, with Wingate set to tee off at 8:30 a.m.
- The Bulldogs will look to build on their consistent opening round as they aim to climb the leaderboard and secure a spot in the NCAA Championships
