Charlotte, N.C.----The No. 1 Wingate University men's cross country team competed in the Queen City Invite on the Larry McAfee Course at McAlpine Creek Park Friday. The Bulldogs finished 16th in the 25-team field. Freshman Rodrigo Najera Alvarez led the defending national champions with his 26:52.0 8K race. He finished 58th overall.
 
Men's 8K race
 
Eleven Wingate student-athletes competed in the Queen City Invite. Junior Zedrick Williams was the Bulldogs' second finisher, thanks to his 8K time of 27:27.7. Sophomores Connor Schaaf and Chase Nyman were next on the WU charts. Schaaf posted an 8K time of 28:10.8, while Nyman checked in with his time of 28:39.4.
 
Junior Bradley Hummel rounded out Wingate's top five with his 8K time of 28:47.0. Two hundred fifty-seven student-athletes finished the Queen City Invite men's 8K competition Friday.
 
The Charlotte 49ers won the men's team competition with 41 points, edging North Florida by three markers (41-44). Marshall University made it a clean NCAA Division I sweep of the podium, taking third place with 138 points. North Carolina Central freshman Aaron Alukunyang won the individual gold medal with his 8K time of 24:08.0.

Wingate competes in the Converse Kick-off Saturday, September 19 in Spartanburg, South Carolina. Converse University is hosting the event on the Milliken Research Park cross country course. The race serves as a preview for the NCAA Southeast Region competition in November.
