Dahlonega, Ga.----The No. 6 Wingate University men's golf team put together a strong opening day at the Lake Lanier Collegiate Classic, hosted by the University of North Georgia at Achasta Golf Club. Battling through the first 30 holes before round two was suspended due to darkness, the Bulldogs sit firmly in a tie for fourth place at two-under par as a team.  
 
Wingate shot a round one score of four-over-par 284 on the par-70, 6915-yard layout. The Bulldogs were six-under-par in round two when play was suspended. Host North Georgia was in first place when play ended Monday.
 
Individual Highlights
 
Junior Max Drott shot a two-under-par 68 in first round. His scorecard featured three birdies.
Sophomores Alex Alder, Mattia D'Errico and Garrison Welborn posted identical two-over-par 72 scores in the first round. Welborn had four birdies. Sophomore Finn Ellis had a six-over-par 76 in the opening stanza.
 
Welborn led the Bulldogs with four first-round birdies. Drott and D'Errico were next with three birdies each. Wingate will look to carry its momentum forward when play resumes Tuesday.
 
Up next for the No. 6 Bulldogs
 
Wingate and the other 15 teams in the Lake Lanier Collegiate Classic field will resume round two Tuesday morning. Round three will follow.
