Dahlonega, Ga.----The No. 6 Wingate University men's golf team shot its best round of the tournament Tuesday to conclude the Lake Lanier Collegiate Classic, hosted by the University of North Georgia at Achasta Golf Club. After battling through shifting weather and a suspended opening, the Bulldogs posted a closing three-under-par 277 to secure sixth place in a highly-competitive field.
 
The South Atlantic Conference member Bulldogs completed 54 holes at even-par 840 on the par-70, 6915-yard layout. Wingate a four-over-par 284 in the first round and a one-under-par 279 in the second round, which spanned both Monday and Tuesday. Host North Georgia shot a 34-under-par 806 to win the 16-team event by 10 strokes over Lincoln Memorial.

"This was an eventful week with a few weather delays. The team had a tough start and we didn't play as well as we hoped, but we managed to turn things around a bit in the final round. My game felt solid overall. I started the final round a bit slow, but I'm super pleased with how I stayed patient and finished strong."
 
Individual Highlights, final round edition
 
Junior Max Drott led the Wingate charge with an incredible final round, catching fire with six birdies to card a collegiate-best, five-under-par 65. Drott combined his third round effort with an opening two-under-par 68 (three birdies) and a second round one-over-par 71 (four birdies), surging up the leader board to finish tied for eighth place.
 
Sophomore Mattia D'Errico put together a brilliant middle round, firing four birdies on his way to a three-under-par 67. Coupled with an opening two-over-par 72 (three birdies) and a closing two-over-par 72 (two birdies), he wrapped up the event tied for 29th place.
 
Sophomore Finn Ellis played steady golf during his final two rounds. He sank three second-round birdies on his way to a one-under-par 69. He finished with an even-par 70 in the third round (two birdies), concluding the tourney at five-over-par 215. Ellis tied for 48th place.
 
Sophomore Garrison Welborn showed grit through the rounds, carding four birdies in his opening two-over-par 72 round. He concluded the event with an even-par 70 (two birdies) to finish in a tie for 58th place.
 
Sophomore Alex Alder was battle-tested throughout the tournament, carding a two-over-par 72 opening round with one birdie and following it up with another two-over-par 72 performance featuring three birdies in the second stanza.
 
Up next for the No. 6 Bulldogs
 
With solid rounds under par down the stretch, the team caps off a productive week in Georgia and carries good momentum into the heart of the fall schedule. Next on the horizon is a return trip to Georgia for the Hurricane Invitational, hosted by Georgia Southwestern. The annual event is contested at the Doublegate Country Club in Albany, Georgia.
