Biography
2008-09: It will be hard to top the year Gus Chagas had in 2008-09 where he racked up seven All-American Awards as well as a conference title. Chagas took home a second place trophy in his signature 200 Freestyle event and looks to add another National title this year. In addition, Chagas posted personal bests at the 2009 National Championships in three different events.
2007-08: Chagas was the conference champion in three different events for the Bulldogs during the 2007-08 year. Chagas won the 200 Freestyle, the 800 Freestyle relay and the 400 Freestyle Relay. He is a part of six Wingate men's swimming records, including individual bests in the 200 Freestyle and 200 Fly.
2006-07: Chagas became Wingate University’s first ever national champion when he won the 200 free in the 2007 national championship meet. Chagas was also an All-American in the 50 free, 100 free, 100 fly, 200 medley relay, 400 medley relay and 400 free relay. He was a conference champion in the 50 free, 100 fly and 100 free. He set school records in the 50, 100 and 150 free.
HIGH SCHOOL: Chagas has been swimming internationally since 1997. He won the 2001 National Championship in Brazil as a member of Esporte Clube Pinneiros. He also won two events in the YMCA Nationals for his team in Roanoke, Va. in 2005. He set two U.S. Open National Records on relays in 2006. Gus is the son of Jose Ademir and Lucia Chagas.
