Biography
2009-10: Ashley Denton finished in a tie for 11th place at the NCAA Division II regional tournament in Salisbury. Denton was the only Wingate golfer (male or female) to finish under par in the 2009-10 season with a three-under-par 70 in the second round of the Agnes McAmis Memorial. Denton finished in the top 10 five times with a season best runner-up placement at the McAmis Memorial. Denton finished in seventh place at the Food Lion SAC Championships. Denton posted a team-best 78.2 average.
2008-09: Ashley Denton competed in every event during the 08-09 campaign, helping the Bulldogs earn a berth in the NCAA Division II Super Regional. She had a team-best 79.3 scoring average. Denton Collected two wins during the fall portion of the schedule, winning the Tusculum Fall Classic and L-R Myrtle Beach Intercollegiate. She finished second at the Patsy Rendleman Invitational at CC of Salisbury. Recorded her best round, a 73, in the first round of the L-R Myrtle Beach Intercoll. Posted six Top-10 finishes during the year and finished outside the Top-20 only twice.
2007-08: Denton was a first team all-conference performer and was named the SAC Freshman of the Year. She played in 10 events on the year, with a team-best stroke average of 78.0. Denton had eight top 10 finishes, including six top-five finishes and two victories. She posted rounds of 76, 78 and 77 to take home the title at the SAC Tournament. Her rounds of 80 and 78 were good for medalist honors at the Chick-Fil-A Intercollegiate. She shot 79 and 75 at the Tusculum Fall Classic to finish third. She shot 81 and 80 in the J. Ralph Hargett Memorial to finish fourth, followed by rounds of 78 and 73 at the Agnes Memorial to finish fifth. In her final four events of the year, Denton finished no worse than fifth while winning two titles.
Ashley Denton brings an impressive resume to the Bulldog women’s golf program. She won the 2007 Eastern North Carolina Optimist Qualifying Tournament at Keith Hills Country Club in Buies Creek in April, 2007. As a result of her victory, she was able to compete in the Optimist International Junior Golf Championships in Palm Beach Gardens, Fla. from July 24-29, 2007. Denton has many junior golf accolades. She won the 2006 SunTrust Tournament at Bryan Park in Greensboro. The tournament attracts some of the top high school golfers from the region. Denton fired a one-over par 73 on the final day to win the tournament. At Knightdale High School, Denton led the Knights to back-to-back conference championships her junior and senior seasons. An All-Conference performer, Denton placed 13th in the 2006 North Carolina High School Athletic Association (NCHSAA) state 4A women’s golf championship at Pinehurst number five.
Denton was a very active member of the Knightdale High School student body. She was a member of the National Honor Society, the Future Farmers of America and the Junior Optimists. A Who’s Who honoree, Denton was a Governor’s School nominee and a Morehead Scholarship nominee. Ashley Denton is the daughter of Steve and Alma Sue Denton.
