Bulldogs rally for dramatic 2-1 win at Lenoir-Rhyne

Wingate University sophomore forward Paulo Brunetto (Sao Paulo, Brazil) scored 10 seconds into the second overtime to give the Bulldogs a dramatic 2-1 win over the Bears of Lenoir-Rhyne University in South Atlantic Conference men’s soccer action Wednesday night. The Bulldogs improve to 9-2 overall and 5-1 in the South Atlantic Conference. Lenoir-Rhyne falls to 7-5-3 overall and 3-2-2 in the conference. 

"I am really proud of the team spirt," Wingate head coach Gary Hamill says. "We know our season is coming down to the wire, and we have to fight every minute of the way. Tonight we got one step closer."

After a scoreless first half, the Bears took a 1-0 lead 18:41 into the second half on a goal from junior forward Dave Bailey (Bath, England). Junior forward John Ferguson (Fife, Scotland) assisted on the play.

The Bulldogs tied the game with 2:17 remaining in regulation. Senior forward Junior Nyemb (Douala, Cameroon) netted his seventh goal of the year, getting the assist from freshman midfielder Gui Lima (Sao Paulo, Brazil).

After a scoreless first overtime period, a throw in from sophomore defender Tom Poole (Birmingham, England) went to the back post, where Brunetto headed in his fifth goal of the year to give Wingate the victory.

The Bulldogs held a 21-16 advantage in shots, including a 7-4 edge in shots on goal. Junior goalkeeper Joey Calandra (Mount Pleasant, N.C.) collected three saves for the Bulldogs.

The Bulldogs return to action Friday night, traveling to Mars Hill for a 7:30 p.m. start. Lenoir-Rhyne travels to Belmont Abbey next Wednesday for a 7 p.m. start.
